A correspondent of the Brooklyn Adver-
iser,in referring to a late lecture by Professer
Silliman, Jr., whonientioned the discovery

measuring 80 feet in length, from which be
naturally inferred. as no living specimen has
been found, that all animals had greatly de-
generated in size. confirms the suppnsilion by
referring to the history of giants in the olden
time, of which he furnishes a list. From
that it seems that we, ofthe present day, are
comparatively dwarfs, when placed by the
side of th_e thirty feet gentleman ofantiquityl
The shin bone of Mr. Kentolochus R-rx, de
scribed below, ‘measured four feet, and be,
according to the Abbe la Cb-appe, was just
the. height of a race of people called Wotia-
acksl Verily there -were giants in those days.
The giant exhibited at Ranch in I735
measured over 8 feet.
Gorapius saw a girl who was "IO feet high.
The body of Orestes was ll; feee high.
The giant Gnilbara. brouglit from Arabia
to Rome. under Claudius Caesar, was near
10 feet high.

The Chevalier Scorg, in his voyage to

‘caverns of that mountain, the head of Guanch
which had 80 teeth, and that his body was

The-giant Feragus, slain by Orolando.
nephew to Charlcmignc, was eighteen feet
high.
In l6l4. near St. Germaine, was found
the tomb of the giant Isoret, who was near
20 feet high.
In I50’-J, near Rotten. they found a skele-
ton whose skull hold a bushel of corn, and
whose body must have been I8 feet long.
Plat.-rus saw at Lucerne the human bones
ofa subject I9 feet long.
The Giant Bucart was 22; feet high ; his
bones were found in 1705, near the banks of
the river Morderi.
In I630, near a castle in D-uphine, a
tomb was found 33 feet long, I2 wide and 8
high, on which was cut on a grey stone thi-

Near Naz-crino,.in Sicily. in I548, was

Mr. Morse says in his Geography. that
there is upon the Rock Ridge, in the ISI-
land of Ceylon, a tomb of immense Iength——

take him to get asleep all over ?
Goliah of Gith, was six cubits and a swan

tes. they reported the children of Anak as
giants, for the spies had said that they eat
up the inhabitants of the land.

We are glad to see a writer "in the Nor-
walk Gazette mooting the subject of intro-
ducing the Work House system in connec-
tion with our common jail. It is a system,
that for some two or three years, has been in
operation in the counties of Hart.‘ord and
New Haven, with very desirable results.
Petty ofi-nders, under this system, are put
into the workshop. and by their labor con-
tribute to the county fund, ritber than by
drawing upon it for their support, while un-
dergoing nominil punishment, but a fivor
to most of the delinquents confined in our
jail—-they are too indolent to e.irn a livcli
hood out side thejail,and, consoqu.-n=.ly. they
are notdeterred from committing zrime, thro’
any fear of being shop’d up in Cf)llIfOfICtI)It‘
quarters. where they know they will get
much better f.-ire than they can furnish for
themselves. and no labor required from them.
But there is another serious evil under
our present system, and that is. vi ry many
petty offenses are altogether overlooked by.
our public authorities, because an arrest
would subject the town or county too heavy
bill of expense, without inflicting poni.-.li-
ment, and the offender is thus encouraged to
continiieon in his vi:ious course, until his
petty-offenses grow to crimes of magnitude.
There is not a town in the county, alongthe
seaboard especially, but has a goodly num-
ber of subjects that require a little work
house correction—a correction that would
not only benefit themselves, but the public
peace and morals generally. It would re
quire a very long article to set forth all the
advantages to be derived front a well regu-
lated work house in connection with our
county prison discipline. the only matter of
astontsbrnent with us is. that while the s 's-
tem has been so successfully tested in some
of our sister counties, Old Fairficld county
is as yet, unmoved on the suljcct. We
have a statute ample in provisions--a one
cent tax, together with a bonus appropiatod
by the State. would be sufiicient to meet all
contingencies for public buildings, which we
doubt not would meet the approbition of a
vast majority of our tax payers—.-all that is
necessary to consummate the very desirable
object is. a spirited movement on the part of
the Judge and Commissioners of our County
Court.
A fact.-—It is confidently asserted that a
poor young man has but two alternatives-—
either to go to work or go to the devil. A
great number choose the latter. It is a sin-
gular choice, but those who make it may be
seen any fine day, lounging in squads about
the corners of the strees. with stumps of ci-
gars in their mouths.——N.Y. Herald
