REMARKABLE DESTRUCTlON
OF FISH.
The New London (Cunn.).‘~lews. relates on
theaulhority ofa fisherman just arrived in port
the following singular occurrences:
The smack in which he had been was un-
successful, but few fish having been takt-n.a.
on the old -fishing grounds not -one could
be found! In returning along the. south
shore of Long lslund, their attention was ut-
tracted tothe beach, which was literally
strewed with the bodies of dead fish just
washed up by the sea.
Black fish, cunners, lobsters, and crabs,
and many other species which inhabit our
shores at this season, lay promiscuonsly on
the sand. On examining the well of the
smack, it was discovered that the fish
which they had taken ttcre also dead.-
The shore was examined casttva rd, toward
Montauk Point, and it was found to be cov
ered alike with dead fish. ,_
'\Ve are also informed that the smack Car-
oline, on Friday lust. passed trough a ‘t rip”
ofthe sea, (formed by adverse tides, we sud-
pose,) and as far as could be seen, in either
direction, the rip was filled with dead fish.
Soon after this the well of the smack was
sxamined and every fish in it found to be
