sirrcss of mind. They are quite anxious to‘sh0\V
the world how perfectly clear they are, if the
evil of annexationgbefalls the country, as there
is some prospect ofits doing. VVe hear oftheir
seekingiioppnrtiini ies vrith a great deal of ‘in-
dustry. to establish their innocence on this point.
This is an omen of good. It shows that the
evil is beginning at the right place to work its
own care. Conscience which they have hitherto
led by the nose, is beginning to assert its pre-
rogatives, and the first operation of it, is to cast
ofI,or up, the ‘rnire and dirt’ ofiiiimau restraint.
_ It will require sometime to work itself clear,
but that time we begin to think uill come,anil
there is, we at least begin to hope, some evi-
dences nf a return, by the uteri who have been
chasing the one idea like a .lat;ko'lantern',to
the exercise of a little sanity and conimou sense.

finest specimens of architecture iii the coirntry.

were killed instantly, others were seriously in-
j-ired, and some it was snpposetl, were buried
beneath the timbers. The fire is supposed to
have originated from a spark fro-i‘. a locomotive.

as U. S. Senators from that State; the former
in fill the vacancy created by the death of
Dr. Linn, and the latter for the term of six

ly 30. Benton received 74votr.-s-——all other
candidates 57; 32 of which were for Thomas
B. English. A change of 5 votes would
