bration at Starirfortl appetirsto have been a very-
tolerablc affair. As to numbers it was respect-
able, oration decitlcdly good,—dinncr”ditio.——
Toasts rather moderate, even the editor of the
Advocate was not in his usual gtorv. Tliere
was nothing about the table ofa sparkling nature
except the Chanipuign, and the "Par't2°7tg Toast
of the President pro tcm——Our honored selves.”

IN PIilLADt~‘.L‘PItt.-\ the day was celebrated
party wise—by the Whigs, the Locos, and the
Tyler and Porter party. The latter it is said
mustered in considerable strength, owing to a
very free circulation of tickets. The hetero-
gcnious elements thtis brought together, didn’t
conglomerate, and the consequence was, that
decency antl decorum were not emphatically the
getiiuses which presided at their board.

The day was marked by a greater amount of
guzzling. dissipaiiin. and fighting. than any
previous 4th, for several years, so say some of
the letter writers.

The only notice of our national anniversary
by the citizens of this borough. was taken by
the children of the Sunday Schools attached to
the Congregational and Episcopal Churches.
Those ofthe Congregttional church, accompa-
nied by their teachers, accepted an ‘invita-
tion from Capt. Brooks, of the steamer Nim-

rod, to visit Bridgeport. The excursion was :1
pleasant one, and yielded much enjoyment,
both to the teachers and childten.

The school connected with St. Paul's Church
assembled in the Parsonage yard, where, under
the spreading elms of that beautiful lawn, as
is usual, we believe on stieh occasions, tlietitne
was spent in,’ religious exercises. amusements,
and in partaking of the liospitalities of their pas.

Sunday afternoon last with a slight dash of
rain. liartlly enough, however to lay the dust.
With the exception of the shower of Sunday
the 2d, which was altogether insufficietrt for
the wants of vegetation, we have not had any
rain for many weeks. The earth is scorched.
