Houses of Congress closed their sittings on Satur;
day Morning last at quarter past one o’clock. The
appropriation bills were all passed. On some of-
them difficulties arose which threatened tlieirdestrnc-
tioii for a time. Among the hills that were not
reached was that ofil\'Ir. Arnold for the retrencl_im_ent
of the pay and mileage of members, and the salaries
ofpublic oflicers. This bill passed the House by
inoreithan four tosone, but was amended to death in
the Senate.
The bill for the reduction of postage also failed.
The House took rather too rank :1 hold in some of
itslrecent proceedings, and cut down all postages to
5 and ten cents, Had the House been a little more
diséi‘eet there is little doubt but that the bill might
have got through the Senate. '
The Post Office monopoly bill prohibiting the
convevzinee of newspapers, pamphlets, &c., except
through the mails, sleeps the sleep of death. Let it
be l)lll":'led deep, that its hideousness may never
again see the light, _ _
Mr. Tyler it is known, nominated some days since,
Iiizniiv A. VVisi: for Minister to France;
CALEB CUSHING for Secretary 'of' tlie Treasury;
VVM. VV. IRVVIN for Charge d’Affaires to Den-'
mark, three of the six Guardsmen in Congress. Mr.
VVise was rejected by 24 to 12; Mr. Cushing by
27 to 19; Mr. Irwin was allowed to pass, though,
ii call of the yeas and nays would probably have
stopped him. _ _
The rejection of Messrs. Cashing and Wise was
promptly communicated to the Presideiit in attend-
_ once at the capitol. In half a hour a message was
‘iraiisinitted to the Senate renomiiiating both VVise
a\n_d Ciisliing, commending their eminentfitness, &c.
andb oping the Senate would think better of iis
decision! They were again rejected, by some 30
ifotes to 8 or ten, and the fact couiiiiunieuted to the
President. In a few minutes he renoiniiiated them
again, this time very crustily. They _wei'e.a,gaii1
rejected, by some 40 votes to two. Ilis ac__cidency
becoming sufficiently amused with this game, sclnt
\ in the nomination ofJohnC. Spencer for Secretary
pf the Treasury, which was confirmed.
Enw.-mi) EVERETT, now embassador to England,
was nominated for Envoy Extraordinary to China,
and promptly c_on_firmed, thougli a few ofhis person-
al friends dissented. considering this ‘a scheme to
get him away from England.
CALVIN BLYTHF. was noiniiiated and confirmed as
Collector at Philadelphia, vice Thomas Smith re-
jected. Judge Blythe "was Mr.Van l3uren’s collector
‘and removed by'l\Ir', Tyler liiioself, to make room
for Jonathad Roberts, a \«Vliig. _
The bill to repeal the Bankrupt Law received the
signature ofthe President on Friday.
The war department and the missions to Eiiglaiid
and France, are all open. The work of removing
may now be expected to commence in earnest.
Last Monday week the President sent a message
_to Congress in reply to acall for inforniotion respect-
‘ -i ng the construction ofthe late treaty in regard to
I the right of visitation claimed by Sir Robert Peel, as
noticed in our last. The President takes somewhat

A rather humorous anecdote illustrative of
the notions of our loco candidate for Congress.
on the subject of a tariff, was related to us the
other day. T\vo members of the party, resi-
ding iii a town not a half a tltkztll miles from
this. in a northerly direction, met at a store in
W'ilion. The conversation had reference to
the views and ,qiial‘:ficaiions of M r. Simone.-
The first speaker stated that the Dr. look free
trade ground, and was a soiiiid anti tariff man.
This, the other doubted, telling his 'C()mpZ].I'll0D
that he must be mistri/ccn, for said he, in a recent
conversation with Dr. Simons, he had it from
the Dr.’s own lips that he was in favor of a
tariff. The first speaker maintained that there
was no possible ground for mistake on his
part, for his information came as direct as that
of the other gentleman, from a personal liner-
view wiih M r. Simous himself! Here, then,
was a difficulty that could not be settled, for,
though the ilociriiics were at antipodes, they
had both been avowed, on the veracity of two
good locos, by the Dr. himself.

secure their elections, when their votes in Con-
gress would be thrown to support the Calhoun

The Coinrnercial Bank ofNew Orleans_clos-
ed its doors on the 21st uh. Its circulation is
supposed to be abopi $100,000.

elected Mayor of New Orleans on the 20th uh.
The vote was 1,350 for Frerel, and 974 for G6-
nois, the Loco Foco candidate who likewise re-
ceived all the Tyler votes.

\Vhercas upon various proceedingsheretofore law-
fully liad,this court on-tlie 28th day ofFeb’ry,1843,di.'l
byits proper decree, deem 5.: declare Nehemiah Peck
of the town of Greenwich, in said district, to be
a Bankrupt, within the purview ofan act ofcongress,
in such case made .2: provided : And whereas said Bank-
rupt liath this day filed herein Court, his further pe
tition, praying that he may be decreed and allowed a
full disc'aargefrom all his debts, due and owing from
him on the 25th day of January, 1843, that being the
day of the date of his original petition in bankruptcy ,;
and that a certificate thereof be granted, as per peti'-
tion on file, dated the 28th day of February, 1843'
Now therefore‘ it isordered, that said petition be
heard at the District Court Room, in New Haven
in said District, on the 1st day of June, 1843, the
same being more than ninety days after said decree
in bankruptcy was passed ; and that notice thereof
be given to all the creditors of said bankrupt, who
may have proved their debts, and to other persons in
interest, to appear at the time and place of such hear
iug, and shew cause why such discharge and certifi-
cate shall not be granted and allowed ; by a" publica-
tion of a copy of this order, in the Norwalk Gazette,
a newspaper printed in said District, at least seventy
days before such day of hearing.
And it is further ordered, that so faras the residence
