THE Whigs of Connecticut will hold a State
Convention at Hartford, on Wednesday, the 1_8th
-day of January next, for the ‘purpose of nonunatlng
candidates for Governor, Lieutenant Governor,
Treasurer, Secretary, and Comptroller; and f0’
doing any other business proper to come before them.
The Convention to consists of delegates from each
town equal to double the number of Representatives
in the General Assembly. The C_onimittees in the
‘several towns will please call meetingsof the Whigs
on Tuesday, the 10th of January, (orat some other
convenient time,) fol-_the purpose. of choosing dele-
gates to said Convention; and it is particularly re-
quested that every town be fully represented. The
Vvhigs of Connecticut remain firm and unbroken,
and they have only to put forth exertions such as
were made in 1838, ’39, ’40 and ’-41 to insure a
glorious ti"-iilmpli.

ing to M r. Geo. VV. Belts. situated on the Down
Town Road, was discovered to be on Fire.-
The engities were soon on tile spot. but from
the conibtlstible nature oflhe building and its
contents, nothing was saved.
Besidesthe quantity of hay consumed, Mr.
Belts sustains the loss of three Cows. which
were stabled withitl the building. and could not
be removed when the flames were discovered.
A persm who \‘."h present and witnessed their
sutli.-rings, describes their moans as piteous iii-
deed.
This makes at least six Barns that have been
burnt in this place within a few mniiths, togeth-
er with five horses, three or four cows, and a
large quantity ofhay, grain, &c., while no clue
has been obtained to the wretched incendiaries.
Are these things to continue,antl be tolerated
by the same listlessrless and indifference on
ttlie part of the community? \Vlly is not a
purse raised by irldividualsor on the part ofthe
borough and a llandsoine reward offered for
the discovery oftllepffcriders? Shall not sortie-
thing be done, and that speedily?
Since the above was put in type, the town
has held it annual meeting and authorized tlle
Select Men to offer a reward of $100.
Brother Holly announces in his last paper,

Our neighbor has done well. during the brief
career ofhis last season ofeditorial labors. He
has shown up the Sheriff, the Kitchen Cabinet
of Norwalk, the evencscent alid veering char-
acter of politics and politicians. himself among
them. and matters arid: things pretty generally.
in a very industrious, not very lovely: btit prob-

blessing, and shall as freely have our congratu-
lation and welcome, when, if ever, be resuines

At the adjourned Town Meeting in Danbury,
the Wliigs elected their Selectman by 31, and
their Grand Jurors by about 70 majority;

Representatives elected as far as heard from are
politically divided as follows—-Whig 173, locos
175, and 12 towns to be heard from, which are
supposed to be equally divided.
The Atlas on the other hand says the case
stands thus—.Whigs 177, locos 173. among the
latter. however, is one abolitionist. The Atlas
observes that “when the Legislature assembles
it will be found that the Whigs have a clear as-
ceudency in the House, and if the few towns
that remain to he heard from, do not disappoint
us, in joint ballot. and that ascendency the locos
need not hope to effect by any manoeuvres.
