HIS article was constructed in consequence
ofa suggestion from the Atnerican lnstttute
—that a simple. portable, and low priced Fur-
nace was wanted by Farmers,‘fur boiling and
steaming food. preparing maple sugar, &-.r:., and
for many mechanical purposes.
It is so formed that a space from one to two
lnches is left between the boiler and the casing
that surrounds it, causing the heat in its passage
0 the pipe. toencirclc all parts ofthe boiler even
to its upper edge.

It will be readily perccivetl that it has many
advantages over those set in brick. It takes
up but little mout. is ligltt. and tnay be placed
on the floor, and rr=qt.-ircs no foundation to sup-
port it, Besides being portable, it may be re-
moved from place to place, as occttsionnr con-
venience may rcquire ; two men are sttllicient
to remove it. It can be made to boil full of veg-
ctables in 30 minutes, and the second filling in
20 minutes. Another very importantconsitlera-
tion, and which will go far to recommend it is,
that it rrquires much less wootl than one of the
same size and form set itt brick. Although
wood may be plenty, it takes time and labor to
procure it.
Since the first introduction a simple appara-
tus for steaming has been trtude, which may be
used with the boiler. It consists of a large box
placed on a strong henctt—-along side the fur-
nace, a part ofthe bottom ofthc box. correspond
ing in size and form with the top of thcboiler. is
filled with holes. the lid or cover is provided
with side pi(‘C-.‘..'~: that L-izut o-.-c-r the sides of the
box when closr-d, atnl wlt-zzt open, serves as a
trough to slide the vegetnbltrs into :2 mnsl‘lln',1l,_ll1).
To use the steamer. it is merely necessary to

about two thirds filled with water. Tlte fur-
nace and boiler is well calculated for an ordi-
