I-IIS'article was constructed in consequence
ofa suggestion from the American Institute
—thata simple, portable. and low priced Fur-
nace was warned by Farmers. for bpiling and
steaming food, preparing maple sugar, &c., and
for many mechanical purposes.
, It is so formed that a space from one to two
nches is left between the boiler and the casing
‘hat surrounds it, causing the heat-in its passage
to the pipe. toencircle all parts ofthe boiler even
toils upper edge. ' i
The American Institute awarded. a silver
medal at their late fair.
A good.cheap. and durable boiler has long
been sought for by the former.
It will be readily perceived that it has many
advantages over those set in" brick. It takes
up but little room. is light, and may be placed
on the flonr_ and requires no foundation to sup-
port it, Besides being portable, it may be re-
moved from place to place, as occasion or con-
venience may require ; two men are sufficient
to remove it. It can be made to boil full of veg-
- r-tables in 30 minutes. and the second filling in
20 minutes. A noiher very important considera-
tion, and which will go far to recommend it is,
that it requires much less wood than one of the
same size and form set in brick. Although
wood may be plenty, it takes time and labor to
proctire it. '
Since the first introduction a simple appara-
tus for steaming has been made, which may be
used with the boiler. It consists of a large box
placed on a strong bench——'-ilong side the fur-
nace, a pnrtofthe bottom ofthe box. correspond-
ing in size and form with the top ofthe boiler. is
filled with holes, the lid or cover is provided
with side pieces that shot over the ‘sides ofthe
box when closed, and when open, serves as a
trnngli to slide the vegetables into a mashing tub.
To use the steamer, it is merely necessary to
turn the b: x on to the caldron, which should be
about two thirds filled with water. The fur-
nace and boiler is well calculated for an ordi-
nary washing boiler, the halfbarrel size is fitted

We see by an advertisement in another col-
umn lhat Messrs. Coinstock ('56 Co., the Agents
forUldridge's Balm ofColunibia. have depu-
ties to sell that article in Boston and elsewhere.
We know a lady of this city whose hair was so
nearly gone as to expose entirely her plirenolo-
gical developcments, whic'n.- considering that
they betokened 11 most amiable disposition, was
not in reality very unfortunate. Nevertheless
she mourned the loss oflocks tliatshe had worn
and, after aye-ar’s fruitless resort to miscallcd
restoraiives. purchased, some months ago, a bot-
tle or two of Oldi'idgc’s Balm, and she has now
ringlels in rich profusion. glassy, and of raven
blackness. We are not putiiiug—none of the
