During that time, there has been little ground
to complain at our urgency in money matters.
Onrsilenceon this score has not arisen from any
corpulence "ofourpurse. but frotn a dislike ofthe
practice ofdunning, and knowing too, that a too
frequent resort to it only tends to defeat the ob-
ject in view. Any one at all acquainted with
income ofa country paper, must be aware, that
he who has no other dependence, cannot long
succeed wiihottt prompt payment of the little
amounts which form that income. At best this
is but a miserable pittance for a life of unremit-
ting toil and slavery. such as does not fall to the
lot of any other member of the community.
Some ofour patrons, under this conviction, have
been moved by generosity as well as justice to
meet their engagement promptly. But there
are others, sotue of whom. perhaps we do not
meet in our daily walks. who from negligence 8:
mischievous procrastination. allow their ac-
counts to run front year to year, apparently
without thinking or caring for the inconvenience
that ensues to the printer. \Vitlr some of this
class we have accounts that have been running
front November 1839. These persons have
availed themselves of our services, sitclt as that;
have been, without giving us Z/zefirst red ccnl.
Can they ju stify their conduct to themselves?
A \Ve have a few mail subscribers whose names
‘we found upon the books of the office when it
came into ottr hands, to wiiom we have sent the
Gazettc—to some for one. and to others for two
years. From these we have received nothing.
VVill they take the advantage of their dis-
tance frcm us to withhold the amount of otrr
claims?

to the New London Advocate. has excited no
little surprise.
MARYLANn.—-It appears that‘ General Apa-
~ thy’ was the sole cause of the Whigs being
defeated in Maryland. The \Vhigs polled 8.-
890 votes less than they gave for Harrison last
L’i"a.'ll, and the Locos fell short of their Presiden-
tial vote about 3000. Maryland is still de-
cidedly ‘Whig. The official majority is only
1538. The Senate holds over, and consists of
15 Whigs and 6 Locos. The House (new) is
.m,,de up of46 Whigs, 42 Locos, and 1 tie --
Whig majority onjoint ballot. 3.
So in Pennsylvania : Porter ftbe Loco F000
Ghvernnr) has less votes by thousands titan
were given to Van Buren last year ; yet a great
multitude ofWhigs have staid at home, and a
gain ofonly Twenty Thousand is claimed for

opponents have notaiued a vote; they ltave
absolutely polled less than them ; but having
the State districted and put together by them-
selves in order to give them a certain ascenden'
cy in the Legislature, they. ltave carried one
more than. halfin each House (19 lo 17 in the
Senate, 37 to 35 in the House) by the greatest
luck in the world. The returns show conclu-
sively that one hundred more Whig voles out
of "our Thirty Thousand unpolled, would have
given us (1 large majority in each House; yet
for waiit of it, Loco Focoisrn pretends to have
carried the State, though it is Whig beyond all
