ELECTIONS.
Pennsylvania.
The returns from the whole of this state show
a Van Buren majority on the popular vote for
members of Congress of about 5,000. This
fora state so large, is but a stnall affair. Our
friends think there is sufficient reason inconsid-
er the electoral vote of the state as pretty sure
for the hero oftlie Tliames.
Ofihe tnembers of Congress chosen. we have
gained 3 and lost 1, making a clear gain of2
members. In the present C mgress, the delega-
tion will stand 11 Whigs to 17 Loco Focus. In
the next Congress, 13 Whigs to 15 Locos.
In the Legislature it is conceded that the \Vhigs
will have a majority in both branches, as given
last week.
Ohio
This state has done nobly.
that the merits of her distinguished citizen are

rightly appreciated. It must be a source of sass
isfactiou to every '\Vhig to know that his can-
didate comes before the country with the testi-
monials of those who know him best.
Returns have been received from every coun-
ty in the State except three, from which it ap-
pears that Hon.Tbotnas Curwin is elected Gov-
ernor, over Wilson ~Shannou his Van Buren
competitor, by a majority of 18.000 votes--that
of the nineteen mctnbers of Congress, twelve
\’Vhig:i and seven Locos have been elected-anzl
that 49 \Vhi;ts and 23 Locos have been elected
to the loiverbrancli oftbe Legislature. Ofthe
the State Senators elected this year 0 are VVbigs
-and 9 Locos. The old Senators stand 6 \Vhi_qs
to 12 Locos, making a total in the Senate of 15
Wltigs to 21 Locos.
In the first Congressional district. now repre-
sented by the famous Dr. Duncan, the \Vhigs
have elected Col. N.G. Pendleton. a gentleman
and a scholar. This isjusily considered a great
victory. The delegation in the present Tongress
from Ohio stands 7 Whigs to 11 Locos.
The majority for the Loco Focos in Ohio in
1838 was 5727--thus showing a Whig gain of
more than 23.000.
Arkansas Election.
We learn, on the authority or the Louisville
(Ken.) Gazette. that it is supposed that in the
State election which took place in Arkansas on
the 7th inst. Mr. Yell, the Van Buren candi-
date. is chosen Governor—lhere being no oppos-
ing candidate . that Mr. Fowler, the \Vhi2, can-
date. is elected to Congress; and that a decided
majority of Whigs have been elected to the Le-
gislature. Ifthis should prove to be correct. it
will authortze us to place Arkansas in the list of
Harrison States--though we confess that as yet
we can hardly credit the statement.
South Carolina Election.
The election of nine members ol‘Congress and
ofmembers ofthe State Legislature, which took
place in South Carolina on the 12th and 13th
inst. appears to‘; have excited no great inzerest.
‘Full returns have not yet ,been received. but
there is no doubt the State has gone decidediy
for John G. Calhoun Gr. Co.or "the Northern
Tum with Southern principles.”
