is to defeat Kent by the scattering votes, and at
the same time loosing the electio_n of Fairficltl.
If this is ad mttted. Kent‘s election will be secure
through the Legislature. which will, without
doubt be Whiv.
This unexpected victory has had an electrical
effect upon the Whigs, while the Vanites are
filled with dismay, and exhibit such visages o
despair as never entered into the conception o
the artist. Chapman flaps his wingsin vain,
and his eflbrts to crow are too feeble for utter-
ance.

from an excursion by steam packet to Hall-
ifax, arrived in that city by the way of
Houlton on Tnesdaty evenintr. A general
wish was expressed by the Citizens to
wait on hitn at the Banger House. In
compliance with this desire expressed to
him by the Mayor, Mr. Adams cheerful-
ly acquiesced. A large number of citi-
zens wztited upon and were introduced to
him, anl at the repeated desire of the com-
pany he favored them with some remarks
of high interest to the‘ cizens of Maine,
which were received‘ with the highest favor.
When he arrived at I-I'oulton from Hali-
faX.a salute of 15 guns was fl-Xed by the
garrison there, and the troops‘ were para-
ded for his inspection,
