ifying from the right good feeling that prevailed,
as well asfor the general worth and respectabil-
ity of the delegates who composed it. Tlte
number ofdelcgate present was 500. The as-
semblage was not so large as it was expected to
be by many in this part ofthe state. VVt=. were
not fully aware ofthe absorbing interest felt at
the east in the great Bunker Hill affair. Our
friends in the eastern sections of the state had
not, it seems, loottetl for a mass conventiort-
a regular Tippecanoe gathering. Their expect-

He received the unanimous vote oftlie delegates
from this county, anti we fear not but that the
result will show a pretty unanimous vote of the
freeman of the state in his f.tvor. \\'c are wil-
ling he should take the field against such all ap-
poncnt as T. T. \Vhittlesey, Esq. whose ultra
feleral notions. make him somewhat nncurrent
even among his own party. His democracy,
about which he has lately made some parade,
is 11 little like the new shell of a crab, it requires
a short time to harden.

Concerning the candidates in general, we a-
dopt the langttage of the Hartford Patriot and
Democrat : " They aretried and constant friends
nfthe People. and we feel a conscious pride itt
being able to place such names in our columns.
\Ve feel confitlent that no selection could have
been made, which would have been more ac-
ceptable to the People, and the Covention is en-
titled to all praise for the correct, judicious and
prudent uianr.er in which all the business was
transacted."

'n'.—In the midst ofthc multiplicity ofsnttjects
calling for attention, this important one has
been neglected. An advertisenient will be found
in another part of this paper, of the Secretary
ofthe society recently formed at Fairficll, un-
der an act t.-ftlre last session of the Legislature.
We cotnrnend_the subjtect to the attention of our
agricultural readers, as one that is intimately
connected with their interests. Organizations
ofihis nature, in this as well as other pursuits,
have been attended \\ ill) the happiest consequen—'
ces. \Vhen many minds are enlisted in the in-
vestigation of any Sltlljficl or class of subjects,
they seldom fail to elicit discoveries, which fre-
quently are ofgreat importance. Our agricul-

tural business, we think we may szate, is as sus-
ceptiltles ofimprovement as any other branch of
industry, while. perhaps as little has been tlone
‘as in any other to effect any improvement. The
encouragement offered by the state, is producing
a general movement in the ma.tter, and the Far-
mers ofthis county in ttst not be behind those of
other sections oftlte state.

Since the above was in type, we have found
it impossible to insert the advertisement alluded
to. we therefore give the time of holding the
meeting, which is on the 19th inst. at 10 o'clock,
.1 51. at the Court House in Fairfield.

successfully against the most gigantic power of
me world? \Vhen this struggle, which is «lig-
nified by the name of war! began, according in
documentary evidence, the number of Seminoles
was estimated at 3,000 men, women and child-
ren. According to the usual tnode ofcomputa-
tion, one fifth of this nutnber, 600, were worri-
ors. Against this pitiful squad ofsqualid, bare-
foot Indians, there has been employed a force
varying probably from 8 to 10 thousand men,
‘with an abundant supply of every thing needful
to carry on a vigorous warfare, through aspace
offour or five years, at an expense of some
340 000,000.’ ‘ And what has been accomplish-

ters of course. or from a just estimate of their
own inefficiency and imbecility. they have
yielded to the opinion, that to put an end to In-
dian depredation is too mighty a wnrlt for them
to accomplish.
