the morning of the 15th, a fire broke out
— in the rear of 87 and 89 Eldridge street.-
.. “Several" buildings and a large amount of
property were consumed; and, moist melan-
choly to relate, two of the firemen, Mr. J.
S. Wells, (assistant engineer.) and Mr. Glas-
co, (secretary of Hose Co. No. 15,) were
‘-- killed, and several others wounded. The
unfortunate sufferers were engaged in extin-
guishing the fire in the frame building No.
‘ -81, when the whole gablclofthe brick house
No. 89 ("of the approved modern construc-
tion, viz. ofthe ltast possible thickness, and
, i with bricks guiltless ofmortar,") tumbled on
'=to the slender roof, and buried them beneath
lithe ruins.

but a single day, and passed off with won-
tlerful quietness. The polls were open at
'69 difiisrent places, agreeably to the subdi-
vision instituted under the. new Registry
Law. That part of the Law which rizlates
\ to the registration of votes, does not go into
