That Dr. Troop has made an important dis-
covery in the science of medicine and-the pliys-
iology of the human system, of more importance
to the well~beiiig.1ndhcalth of the great human
faniily,tlian all that has heretofore been known,
cannot be doubted by the most sceptical.
I shall now proceed to st-iteiu whatmytheory
and iinnortant discovery consists. and I flatter
mysclfllirit I shall be able to make it clear that
this new doctrine is true, the theory based on
physiological principles, and in perfect accord-
ance with naturc’s laws. Before, liowcvendoiug
this, I wish l.0_(7x;)lall1 one word which 1 shall
have occasion to make frequent use of viz:
sec,-elion] By secretion, 1 mean that part of
the animal econoriiy which separates the fluids
of the body, as for example—the bile_or gall is
a fluid, and is a Secretion of the Liver.
Now the doctrine I hold,and am able to defend
as the only true one, is this—that all diseases
have their brigin in a suppressed. imperfect, or
dearaved secretion of various organs, for exam-
plé—:i person from exposure to cold, or any
other cause, has the secretion of the skin, or
perspiration, which is the same thing. checked,
does it not produce fever pains in the head,
limbs, &c. Now if this natural secretion 01‘

patient is safe. Take 2] case of Yellow Fever,

unless that secretion is checked and changed, the
patient dies within a few hours; but if the secre-
tion is changotl to a healthy one, a recovery is
certain.
What do we observe in Croup? Is there not
a formation of a membrane in the wind pipe,
produced by an unnatural secretion, which
tlircatons the little sufferer with instant death,
unless this secretion and f'orina'.ion' bo imme-
diately checked! Most certainly.
Take a case of fever, what do we observe?
do we not find the skin dry and hot,also the
palms of the hands rind so‘es of the feet’! Most
certainly. The fever is not~ the cause of this
heat, but because the secretion of the skin is
chcckcd,the fever is the consequence. Nobody
ever knew the skin to be hot when it was moist,
or when the secretion was perfect. In fever,we
find the mouth and tongue dry, and great thirst.
' What is the cause of this '9 According to my
theory, I say that the small glands in the mouth
and throat do-not perform their natural secretion,
and that is the reason of so much thirst and
dryness of the mouth. In fever, there is often=
constipation, and the passages are black,green,
or otherwise; does this not show that the secre-
tion of the liver and other organs is imperfect
or dcficent. My pills wil. remove the beat of
the skin, by opening its secretion. They will
removetlie thirst and dryness of the month by
restoring the secretion of the glands, and in the
same manner all the other functions. '
VVe think the cases we have taken to-illustrate
this doctrine, fully prove it true.. We might go
on with every disease in the whole catalogue of
human infirmities, and the proofofour doctrine
would be equally clear. but we thinkit unneces-
s-iry_to do so, especially as our limits are con-

Believing the doctrine or theory illustrated
above, to be the doctrine of nature, and in the
most perfect harmony with naturc’s laws,Ifelt
confident that the Great Giver of-all good had
created the iiecessary remedies, but whether I:
was to be the humble instrument to discover
I was resolved to make use
of the reason God had given me to accomplish
this great object. That lhave succeeded, there
is not the least doubt, and the Pills I now offer
to this intelligent coiniiiunity. possess intrinsic
merit, and have the strongvst cluiuis upon your
confidence, because they are founded upon true
principles and a correct knowledge of the cause
of disease.

we should still adhere to this resolution first
