LOIV spirits is a certain state of the mind atcom

panied by indigestion. wherein the greatest
evils are app relic-ndad upon the. slightest grounds
and the worst consequences imagined. Am-ieni nie-
dical writers supposed this disease to he confined to.
those pi rticulai regions ol the abdomen, technically
called liy;iot‘ouilria, which are situated on the right
or left side of that cavity, whence comes the name
liypocondriasis.

SYDIPTOIIS.

The common corporeal symptoms are. flatulency
in the stomach or bowels. aciid eructations, costive-
ness. spasmodic pains. giddiness, dimness of sight.
palpitations. and often an utter inability of fixing
the attention upon any subject of importance. or on-
gaging in anything that de_m.'iuds vigor or courage.
Also languidness-_-the mind bccoines irritable,
thoughtful,despnnding. melancholy, and dejected,
accoinpanied with a total dcraingemeiu ofthe nerv
nus system. The mental feelings and peculiartrains
of ideas that haunt the imagination and overivlielm
the judginent. exhibit an infinite diversity. Ths
wisest and best men are as open to this nfiliction a
the weakest.

CAUSES.

relieved by social intercourse. or exert-isc,a dissolute
habit. great excess in eating and drinking, the im-
inoderate use of mercury , violent purgatives. the
suppression of some habitual discharge, (as, the ob
struction oftlte monsr-s.)or long continued eruption;
relaxation or tlebility of one or more important or-
gans within the abtlonicn. is a frequent cause.

TREATMENT;

The principal objects of treatmeni are, to remove
irdigestion, to strengthen the body, ann to enliven
the spirits, which in i_v be promoted by exercise. ear.
ly hours, regular meals and pleasant conversation.
The bowels (if costive) being carefully regulated by
the occasioiialuse of mild apeiient. We know no-
thing better calculated to obtain this end, than Dr.
Wm. Evans’ Aperieut Pills-_tieing mild and certain
in their operation. Tliebowels being once cleansed.
hisinestimable Camumile Pills, [which are tonic,

exclusive right of making, constructing,
using, and vending to others to be used, Coss’s
Patent, Shingle, Clapboard, and Lath Sawing
.~Ilachz'ne.’witnin the Iiinits of the county of Fair-
fii-ld. in the state or Connecticut, and they now
offer for sale a fewof said Machines, with the
right and privilege of usingthem in the different
towns in said county.

This machine was recently invented by Mr.
Coss, of Milford, New Hampshire. It is com-
pact in its form, and simple in its construction.
The three machines being connected, it requires
only the rootn of one common machine. It is
conceded by all who have used this machine or
examined it,that it will saw more shingles, clap-
boards, &.c. in the same length of time. and
make it greater saving of Lumberthaii any other
machine now in use. It requires only a common
laborer to run the machine and keep it in order.
It can beset in any inillwhere power can be ob-
tained froin water and steam, and requires but
little room. It is the cheapest and most. profita
ble machine before the public for sawing shingles,
clapboards, and lath. and any other sawing usu-
ally done by a circular saw. Where this ma-
chine has been used, the owners have received a
profit from sawing their slabs intoshingles,clap-
boards, lath, sash stuff, &c.

Two of said machines are now in operation in
this county—one at Brookfield, (Met-.lter’s Mills)
and one in Danbury, (Bethel society.) at Timo~
-thy Hollister’s Saw Mill. Mill and Lumber
owners, and the public in general, are invited to
examine said machines.
