ON’ LOW SPIRITS.
OW spirits is a certain state of the mind accom
panied by indigestion, wherein the greates
evils are app rebendad upon the slightest grounds
and the worst consequences imagined. Ant-ient me
elical ‘writers supposed this disease to be confined to,
those particular regions of the abdomen, technically
called hypocoittlria, which are situated on the right

CAUSES.
A sedentary life of anv kind, especially severe
study protracted to a late hour in tlte night, and rarely
relieved by social intcrcoui'se.. or exert-ist-, a dissolute
habit. great excess in eating and drinking, the ini-
moderate use of inercnry, violent purgatives. the
suppression of some hstbitnal discliargt‘, (=15. ll"? _0l)‘
struction of the menses.) or long continued eruption;
relaxation or tlebility of one or more itnpottaut or-
gans within the abtlomcn, is a frequent cause.
TRICATIIIENT.
The principal objects of treatment are, to retrieve
indigestion, to strengiltcn the I)O(I_Y, anti to enliven
the spirits, which in my beprpinoted lty exercise. ¢_‘flI‘~
ly hours, regular meals anti pleasant conversation.
The bowels (if costive) being carefullv regttlatetl by
