:I‘JO»W spirits is a certain state of the mind accom
panied by indigestion, wherein the greates
evils are apprehendad upon the slightest grounds-
and the worst consequences imagined. Am-ient met
dical writeis supposed this disease to be confined to
those particular regions of the abdomen», technically
called hypocondria, which are situated on the right
or left side of that cavity, whence comes the 't3i‘.11‘.O
hypooondriasis.

The common corporeal symptoms are. flal-“l0,“3.‘r'
in the stomach or bowels, aciid eriictations, cos'.ive~
riess,spasinodic pains. giddiness, dinin_ess of sight,
palpitations, and often an utter inability of fixing
the attention upon any subject of importance. orch-
gaging in any thing that demands vigor or courage.
Also languidness—the mind becomes irritable,
th0ughtful,desponding, lltt"lt:l1CIlOly, and dejected,
accompanied with a total derangement of the nerv
ous system. The mental feelings and peculiartrain
of ideas that Iiaunt the imagination and overwlielin
the judgment, exhibit an infinite diversity. _ The
wisest and best men are as open to this atlliction as
the weakest.
CAUSICS.
A sedentary life of any kind, especially severe
study protracted to a late liourin the night, and rarely
relieved by social intt-.-rcourse_. or exercise, a dissoluie
habit. great excess in eating and drinking, the ini-
inoderate use of mercury, violent purgativiss. the
suppression of some habitual discliarge, (as, the ob-
smlcuon or the menses.) or long continued eruption;
relaxation or tlebility of one or more important or-
gans within the abiioincii, is a l'i‘o<1,ueiit C-lust‘.

The principal objects of trearinerit are, to rcinove
indigestion, to strengthen the body, and to enliven
the spirits, which m iy be promoted by exercise. t_‘9.r-
ly hours, regular meals and pleasant conversation.
The bowels (if costive) being carefullv regulated by
the occasional use of mild aperient. We know no-
thing‘ better calculated to obtain this end, than Dr.
