Between the two it was projected

And when his term of rule expired,
And he from royal den retired,
The Jackall next should be appointed
Successor to the “ Lortl‘s Annointed."
The schetne thus laid. with visage bland
The Jackall galloped through the land,
'-Now hither and now thither veering,
For the purpose of electioneering,
First, he proclaimed, both night and morn,
" The Lion to command was born ;”
Then promised to each several species,
Rewards, according-to their wishes.
To beasts of prey, with cunning smiles,
He promised they should “share the spoils ;"
The weak and timid beast's affection,
He won by promising protection;
Till loud they made the welkin ring,
“Long live the Lion, lord and king."
Behold Irim in the royal den—-
He roars aloud and shakes his mane,
‘By all the servile herd confess'd
The wisest, mightiest, “ greatest, best ;“

Sole heir apparent to the throne.
Now when the beaslls of all conditions
Approach his kiugship with petitions,
And laws propose, well understood
And tending to the public good,
Behold the monarch puts on airs

And to them allaffix my vetoes;
Your Constitution, 1. your Bandit,

Though to the beasts this was a sore hit,
For eight long years they grinned and bore it,
' Until the Lioii’s term expired,
And he to distant den retired,
And Jackall, promising “to follow
In the same steps,” came in all hollow,
By willing sutfrages of those

On this he quickly summoned greeting

vigor again. Arrived at Havana, a companion
one day suggested for a frolic, to paint up the
bald eagle. whose color was dark grey, so as to

Mr. Arnot, an advocate of some lietrary as

The impressive aspect of the great Departed,
overpowered the man whose lot it was to trans-
fer the hallowed dust to its last tenement. and he
was unable to conceal his emotions. He placed
-his hand upon the ample forehead, once highest
in the ranks of battle. or throbbing with the
cares of an infant Empire; and hellamented,
we doubt not,that the voice of fame, could not
provoke that silent clay to life again, or pour its
tones of revival into the dull, cold ear of Death.

‘scarcely dissociate frotn an apothesis, consigned
to its low, dim mansion, to be seen no more un-
