will only try it, they will find that washing can
be performed with much less trouble. and ‘lie
clothes‘ will last one-tliird longer in consequence
of not being subjected to that villainous
invention for destroying wearing apparel——a
washing machine:
Take 5 gallons of water,
2 Oz. of Soda.
2 quarts of Lime water.
§ lb. of Soap cut fine. -
After dissolving the above ingredients over the
fire, put the clothes in, previously soaked over
’ night and soaped-—boil them one hour-—then
. put them intolnke warm rinse, and rub them a

little to rid them of the soda, &c. uree rins-
ings will be required.
Cost of Soda at 16 cents per lb. 2 cents—soap
4 cents. Whole cost of materials for washing
_ for a large family, 9 cents.
Another.
Take 4 gallons of water,
1 oz. Soda.
5 pint of Lime water,
3 lb. of Soap.
Dissolve the ingredients overthe fire, and putthe
clothes in dry—rub them in a warm rinse; af-
ter which use two other rinses. VVhole cost for
11 or 5dozen of clothes, 5 cents.
Lime water may be made by slacking apiece
of fresh lime, as large as an egg. Vi/hen set-
tled and clear it is fit for use.

Editorial Labors.—- VVe learn that the wife of
one of the editors in Augusta, Ga. has lately
presented her husband with four pretty boys.
The Legislature of New-Jersey assembled at
Trenton, on the 24th ult. It may have some
advice to give one of their Senators. as we per-
ceive that the Tory papers are calling on Mr.
Senator King to resign, on the ground that he
misrepresents the Legislature ofGcorgia.—C'ou7~.
Specimen of the “ Down East. lVomcn.”—At
the late fair at Boston was presented a very large
carpet maiiufactured from odds and ends, bits of
old cloths, llannels and stockings, iu_ short from
every thing in the shape of woolen rags, from a
ravelled thread up to a bed blanket,the work of
Mrs. Abigail \Velsh, of Newbiiryport. At" the
distance of 5 fcet,wliieh is near enough for well
sized people to look, it has the ap; earauce of a
rich Turkey carpet, of a handsome pattern, and
it will last for years a beautiful carpet. The va-
ltie of this kind of work may be perceived by the
fbllowing estimate of cost, which we find in the
Transcript :

The carpet was made during odd hours. after
the labor ol the family was performed, in four
months, and for the trifling sum above stated,
' with the toil saved froui hours of idlenesss, an
elegant and almost everlasting carpet produced.
A Michigan paper relates the following anec-
dote as illustrative of the Indian character. “A
chief, on his return from the payment, called at
one of the taverns, asking and obtaining almost
everyluxury in the city. . After he had finished,
he stepped to the bar, paid his bill and give the
landlord 25 cents, for which he said he wanted
some, pieces of cold meat and bread. These
he carried to the door and distributed among
his wife and s‘x children, who took them with
remarkable complacency.”
He who cures himself of one badliabit is more
estimable than ifhe had never fallen into it.
