factorily ascertained that animal magnetism is a

structed antipparattis by which the fluid can be

nA'r'rLs or THE nr-me AND THE ALLIGATOR.
On uscorching day in the middle of June
1830, whilst I was seated under a venerable
live oak, oti the evergreen banks of the Teche,
waiting fortlie fish to bite, I was started by the
roaring of sortie animal in the cane brake, ashort
distance below me,apprently getting ready for
action. These notes ofprepiiratiou were quick-
ly succeeded by the sound, offcct trampling down
the cane, and scattering the shells. As soon as I
recovered from my surprise I resolved to take
21 view ofwhat I supposed to be two prairie btills,
mixing impetuously in battle, intercourse so
common in this country and season, v.-‘lieu, as
Thompson says,
‘Through all his lusty veins,
The hull deep-scorched, the urging poison feels.’
When I reached the scene of action, how great
was my astoriishinent, instead of bulls,to behold
at large black bear reared upon his hindjlcgs with
his fore paws raised aloft, as if to make it plunge
His face was bcsmeared with white foam,
sprinkled with red which dropping from h a mouth
rolled down his shaggey breast. Frantic with
the smartnig of his wounds, he stood gnualiing
his teeth, and growling at the enemy. A few
paces in the rear was the cane brake from
which he had issued. On a. bank of snow white
shells, spotted with blood in battle array, stood
bruin’s, foe, in shape of an alligator, 15 feet
long! He looked as ifhe had just been dipped
in the Teachc, and emerged like Aellcs from
the Styx, with an iuvulnernble coat of mniI.~—
He was standing on tiptoe, his back curved up-
ward, and his tongueless mouth, thrown open,
displayed in his wide jaws two large tasks and
rows of teeth. His tail,‘six feet long, raised
from the ground, was constantly waving -like u
boxer's arm, to gather force ; his big eyes start-
ing from his head, glared upon bruin, whilst
sometimes uttering hissing cries, then roaring
like 8. bull.
The combatants were a few paces apart when
I stole upon them, the ‘first round‘ being over.
'l‘liey remained in the attitudes described for
about a mitiute, swelling themselves as large as
attention and great caution, as if each felt canti-
dent that he had met his match. During this
‘ pause I was concealed behind a tree, watching
‘their manmuvre in silence. I could scarcely be-
‘live my eyesight. \Vhat, thought I, can these
‘gtwo beasts have to fight about ? Some readers
linay doubt this tale on this account; but if it
‘had been a bull fight, on one would have doubt-
‘ed it,because every one knows what they are
fighting for.
Bruin, though evidently baffled, had a firm
look, which showed he had not lost confidence
in himself. If the difficulty of the undertaking
had once deceived hitii, he was preparing to re-
csnme it. Accordingly, letting himself down_on
all fours. he rat; furiously at the alligator. The’
alligator was ready for liitu, and throwing his
head and body partly rounrl to avoid the onset,
met bruin half way with a blovt; of his tail,
which rolled him on the shells. Old bruin was
not to be ptit offby one hint-——tliree titncs in ra-
pid succession he rusl e I at the alligator, and was
as often repulsed in the same manner, being
knocked back by each blow just far enough to
give the alligator time to recoverthe swingof his
tail before he returned. The tail of the alliga-
tor sounded like a flail against the coat
of hair oti brui‘u's head and shoulders. but he
bore it without flinchitig, still pushing on to come
to close quarters with his scaly foe. He made
his fourth charge with a degree of dexterity
which those who had never seen this clumsy
animal exercising would suppose him incapable
of. This time he got soclosc to the alligator be-
fore liistail struck him. that the blow came with
balfits usual effect. The alligator was upset by
ilie charge, and before he could recover his feet
bruin grasped him round the body below his
fore legs, and holding him down on his back.
seized one of his legs in his mouth. The alli-
gator was now iii a desperate situation, notwith-
standing his coat of mail, whicli is softer on his
belly than his back : froiu which
‘ The darted steel with idle shivers flies.’
As a Kentuck would say. "he was getting up
fast." Here. if I had dared to speak. and had
supposed he could understand English, I should
have uttered the encouraging cxhortation of the
poet-— ‘
“ Now gallant knight, mw hold thy own,
No uiaideu's arms are round thee thrown.”
The al_ligator attempted in vain to bite ;
pressed dowti as he was. he could not open his
mouth, the upperjriw if which otilymovcs, and
his neck was so still he could not turn his head
short round. The amphibious beast fetched a
scream in despair. but being a warrior “ by flood
and by field," be was not yet entirely overcome.
Writbingliis tail in agony, he happened to strike
it against a small tree that stood next the bank :
aided by this purchase, he made a convulsive
flounder, whicli precipitated himself and bruin,
locked together, into the river.
The bank frotii which they fell was four feet
high, and the water below seven feet deep. The
tranquil stream received the combatants with a
loud splash, then closed over them in silence.—
A volley of ascending bubbles announced their
arrival at the bottbm. where the battle ended.
Presently bruin rose again, scrambled up the
bank, cast a hasty glance back at the river, and
made off. drippingto the cane brake. I never
saw the alligator afterwards to know him; no
doubt he escaped in the water. wliich be certain-
ly would not have done had he remaiticrl a few
minutes longer on land.

ITIZEN S--It is now nearly two years since
C I became general agent. for Dr. Brtindreth’s
celebrated Pills in this County. Every one
