The Tomato as a Medicine.-Dr. Miles, of
Cincinnati, (as we learn from the Whig)_has
ginade a compound iixtract of tomato, tn the torm
‘of pi_lls; which, he says, is a substitute for calo-
mel. How far this discovery _ may &.iisw.6l' all
the purposes of colonial, we will not pretendto
say, as we have no knowledge of.the relative
medical merits; but the writer of this paragraph
does know, from the use of Dr. Miles’ pills in
his family, that they are a valuable medicine,‘
and do not partake of the cliaracter of many of
the ‘quack patent medicines, that have acquired
a reputation from excessive pulling.

quainted with a singular freak of a young man
who made a lottery of liiniself. The following
has been the dcnounccirienl of the ingenious
speculation for the truth of which a‘ provincial
Journal refers us to the civil registry of Lyons.
The drawing took place in the fairest manner
possible, in presence of a notary and of several
witnesses. Mademoiselle Euphrasie B. a
young lady of fortune at Lyons, won the young
man. A singular incident occurred after the
drawing had been decided. The young lady
was still unaware of her good fortune, wlieti one
morning a lady waited upon her, in a state of
most painful excitement, ‘Save my life,
Mademoiselle!’ ‘How I’ ‘Cede your ticker
to me.’ ‘ VVliatticket T’ ‘ The lottery ticket-
the ticket for the young man.’ ‘Oh, I had for-
gotten it.’ ‘Then know, Matlemoiselle, that I
