As we ant.ieipatei_l, the ship Napoleon brought
no news from ].<‘raiice, and her dates from Eng-
land are but two davs later than before received
furnishing notliinghof great iinportaiicc to the
American reader. In the course of the night,
however, the ship United States arrived off the
Hook in a very short passage, having sailed on
the 2d January from Liverpool. The Presi-
dents message had not arrived in England or
France at the t.ime of their departiire. Parlia-
ment was prorogued by proclamation on the
30th tilt. The new parliament is toineet on the
19th February. England was in complete state
of excitement. The elections for the members
of the new house were going on with great. spirit,
both parties making every exertion to scctire
their respective caiiilidates. The Lord 1VIayor
of London gave a dinner to the 'l\'in,u":~: Mllll-<lt3l'-'
on the .'23tl, at which most of them were present‘.

The complete success of these combinations,
by the defeat on the same day of Zumalacarre-
guy‘s battalions by Cordova, Lopez, and Oraa,
and those of Eraso, by Mina and Lorenzo, is
already known to otir readers. The Queen's
troops are in full pursuit of the defeated and
scattered corps of the enemy, and it is stated
that Mina undertakes to bring the revolt to a
speedy close if supplied with the means neces-

encouraged by the accession of their brethren
in England to ollicc. The proposition of the
Belgain iiiiiiisters to the Chambers was to raise
the taxes ten per cent. and to fix the st.anding
force of the country at 110,000 men exclusive
ofthe civic giiards, in order to be prepared for
any thing that may occur.

since, while a young lady was crossing one of
our streets in the vicinity of the State House,
Boston, which allbrd the boys an opporttiuity to
practise their favorite, but auiioyivsg amuse-
ment of coasting. she was struck with a sled,
whit-li emits with prodigious force, tripped up
her heels, and laid her fairly on her back, as a
sailor would sav, “fore. and aft,” across the sled.
The poor boy iiistead of being overjoyed, was
sadly friglitcned at such an tinexpcctcd accessioii

Iiad already acquired wasso great, that he found
it iiiiprisssilile to check its speed; he therefore
wisely udged it best to make the most ofliis bar-
gain, and with admirable presence of mind,
steered the sled with great care, avoiding all ob-
stacles, at the same time bowling out with the
lungs ofa stcntor, “Hold on l\Ia’ain, hold oii-—
keep your feet well tip, and tlicreis no danger.”
The double-loaded sled sped with the velocity
of an arrow—and as the astonished damsel, who
never travelled at such a rate before, and prob-
ably never will again, eveii on a rail road, or in
an air balloon, found herself, before she had
Ii:-irdlv time to take breath, or scream fir assis-
tance: safely landed at the bottom of the Iiill .'—

is strictly true, and has come under otir own
observation within a few days past. :—
Upwards of 25 years since, a lady of New
York, then of considerable wealth, on the occa-
sion of having a friend's child named after her,
in coinpliiieut to her many virtues, besides ma-
king the usual presents of silver plate, purchased
a lottery ticket, and resolved to appropriate the
proceeds, if it drew a prize, to fottr young ladies
who bore her name, in cluding the one already
mentioned. The ticket drew a prize of 3100,
and from that (lay until within a week, nothing
further was heard on the subject : it was suppo-
sed to have been forgotten. To absence. the
vieissittirlcs oflife, and a total interrupted inter-
course were naturally attribtitcd the silence that
Iiad prevailed. Last week, however, a letter was
received by the fatlierofoneoftlieyoungladics,
containing a check on the MercIiant.s’ Bank,
New York, for oiie—foiirtli ofthe proceeds of the
prize, together with all the interest that had ac-
cumulated tlicrcoii, during the lapse of time, and
a very kind and all'ectionate letter accompanied
the remittance. Of course it was wholly unex-
pected, aiid the result could only be attributed
to that. principle of Dutch honesty—tliat old-
school integrity, for which the family ofthe do-

double importance in consequence of its being

the dotible faced Tory press. The people feel
that the party who profess to regard the local
elections as unimportant. in reference to national

elections, and to use the power and influence of

the Tories in the national elections.
