On the night of thc30th June, an attempt
was made by three oftlic prisoners to escape
from l:‘airlicld jail. In the early part of the
evening, from sometliing he had seen or

that some design was to be attempted dur-
ingthe night. He therefore took the pre-
caution to set up,nftcr his family had retired
to watch the movements of the prisoners.
About 11'... o’clock he heard them commence
operations with an anger. He immediately
called the assistance of a couple of men

entered the room of the. culprits, before they
were hardly aware of his approach. On
entering be found each of the prisoners on
his bed apparently asleep. Leaving one of
his men at the door, he proceeded round the
room with the other in search of the instru-

Having discovered it, he was in the act of

his hand, when one of the prisoners sprang
from his bed and struck the man who was

the greatest fury, and seemed determined to

down had recovered and came to his assis-
