Our harbor is at present enlivened by ‘steam-
boat;_competition. The VVGSICIIESIGP has'com-
menccd running, under the command of Capt.
J. -Brooks in opposition to the Citizen, Capt.
Peck, and both carry for a shilling. At the
hour of their arrival, people collect at the docks
and partake of the excitement which exists, and-
canvass the merits of the two lines.

In one point of view, this cornpctition is a
benefit to the community, but in almost every
other an injury. Those who are obliged to go
to New York are benefittcd ; but those who are
induced to go by the clieapncss oftlio fa re—tliose
who are interested in the business prosperity of
the place-—:ind those who neglect their mvn bu-
siness to observe ortake sides, are injured.

In the result of this matter we feel little in-
terest. If we have any wish respecting it, it is
that it may be decided soon, and the public ac

comniodated.

 

In another column will be found some account
of the sufferings of the Cape de, Vcrds, from
Tainine. It must enlist t.lic sympathy of every
‘one. Those who have contributed for their re-
‘lief, will never regret having done so. A late
account estimates the deaths from this cause at
36,500. ‘

Society for Promoting Maiitial Labor in Literary
Institutions,” to allzwho feel any interest in the
subject of education. Itwill he found to contain

information on the subject of education, as well
as the importance of manual labor in promoting
it, than has ever before been collected in so small
a compass, or arranged in so clear and happy a
lnzvnner.

Fire.-—Consumed on the 12th inst. the
store and goods, and shed adjoining, of Mr.
David M. Nettleton, of Derby. The fire
was discovered about one o’clock in the
morning. Mr. Nettleton and his lady were
absent in a neighboring town during
the night, and the store was in chartre
of a young man who was clerk to tfie
owner. The clerk was employed during
the evening, in packing eggs in hay,
from which it is supposed the fire oi-i.
ginated. There had been no fire in the
store during the preceding day, andnonc
in the evening except candles. The
premises and goods were insured at the

stbariilioat Chief Justice Marshal, Capt.
Howes, from Hartford for New York, on
Friday night, about II o’clock, between
tratford Point and Black Rock, came in
contact with a schooner, about I00 tons,
both vessels being under fullwa_i/, blowing
heavy and extremely dark. The Chief
Justice struck the scliooneron her quarter,
had her false bow stove in,lost her best chain
and_unclior, with otherdamage. Laid by for
the Schooner fifteen minutes, but saw noth-
ing more of her, as She passed swiftly
away. From the marks of blood and flesh
on the wreck of the hows, it is feared that
some person in the sclir. was badly wounded,
if not killed.

VVe learn these particiilars from Capt.
Beecher, of the boat S|')lCll(Iltl,VVllO brought
tip the I-Iartford I‘assengcrs from New
York on Saturday evening. The misfor-
tune is to be attributed, mainly, to the fact
that the sclioner showed no light; a fault
which has too oftciioccasioncd disasters on
the narrow waters of the Soiind.—-Ifcrald.

ofllnllnwell. Me. from New York, for Boston.
The schooner was struck on the larboard quar-
ter and Capt Brisrnnn ins'arrlv killed.

case is adding another item to the friglitful
catalogue of Irish miseries. Agitated by
(lemagegucs—assailcd, pluiidered and kept
in constant terror by the VVlll'.Cf(-:CIZ ITl{l.l'tHl-
dcrs; irnpovcrislicd by ab'sentcc-landlords ;
borne down by poverty in all its forms of
destitution : and threatened by the govern-
ment with military law in place of the ordi-
nary tribunals of civil justice, the miserable
people of Ireland are now suffering under
the awful scourge of the pestilence. The
details are appalling. “ Never, says a let-
ter from Limerick, of the l5tli of March,
was there any thing like the state of the
surrounding country. The Cholera has
spread all around. The Reverend Mr.
Noonan, Citrate of Knockany, was here
to day, to purcliase coflins, there not being
hands eiiougli in that place to make them.
At Hospital, to-day, the parish priest
and twelve of his flock are dead of cholera.
Forty persons were attacked last night with
the pestilence, out of which the above
number fell in a very few hours to its ma-
lignant fury. Poor Doctor O’Connell said
mass yesterday, and appeared to enjoy ex-
cellent health. The manner of his death,
(being taken offin three or four hoiirs,) has
created a general feeling of regret and coil-
sternation tlirough the surronning country.
Kilmallock, too, is nearly as bad. Brnree
is totally deserted ; Fcclaniorc attacked at
all points; the Rev. Mr. M’Cartliy, the
parish priest, and his coatljutor, have been
called out of bed to attend the sick and dy-
ing, cleven nights in succession. In short,
the pai'iic_tlirougli the country far exceeds
any thing within the memory of man——

Breach (f promice if ./l1arrz'ugc.——A case of
this descr'ptioii__has occupied the Circuit Court,
Judge E lwards presiding, for the last three
days. The plaintiff, was; Ilannah Eldert, a
young lady',about-,.‘23 years of age, of respectable
connexi0ns,and considerable personal attraction.
Tire defendant, George VVeeks, is a widower,
over sixty years of age, of respectable standing
in society, and in easy circumstances. Plaintiff
had resided in (lefcnr:lant’s family for some time
on the 1-cconirrrendation of his daughter-in-law,
and when her situation was discovered, she was
requested to leave the l.ouse. She laid her mis-
fortune to the defendant's artifices, and charged
him with having promised her marriage—and now
brought her action to recover damages, which
were laid at $10,000. The examination of wit-
nesses, and the arguments of counsel, occupied
the Court from 'I‘uesd ay morning until yesterday
after; osn, when a clorr ease having been made
out for the plaintiff, l.ll(.'.'jlll'j.', aftera consult-
ation ofabout tl rec l'ltIlli‘S., returnel a verdict in
her favor-—darnages $2000, and six cents cost.

JlIurcIer.—-We stated on the authority of the
Utica Sentinel. that a young man named Eroth-
ingham, one oftlio students of the Oneida Insti-
tute, was rriissing from W hitesb‘oi‘oiigli, and fears
were entertained for his safety. The Observer
of this fll0l‘l1ln_t_]' states that Mr. Frotlringham
has been inurde_red. Ile had been to Utica for
asuin of money, and it is supposed had cxliibited
it in the presence oftwo men, who wayluid and
murdered him on his return to the Institute.

 

 

CI-IOLERA AT WIATANZAS.-=-It is gratifyiiig to
learn from an arrival at this port ycstcrdaythat
the previous accounts of the prevalence of the
Cholera at Matanzas were greatly exaggerated.
It is afiimetl with confidence that the daily mor-
tality in that place has at no time exceeded thir-
ly. and for it few days only reached the number
of fifteen. .

Daughter ofFruncis Smith, aged Sth months and 15
