own party. is something new, and we supposed

that the paper would appear with its best face-—
that itwould exhibit the qualities of mind, and
=that stock of general and political information
which‘ marked the man as pro-eminently fitted to

contain, at least, one of his Legislative speechcs_

only a weapon of offence and defence to the

upon all political occasions. Question him—
argue with him, or touch him in ‘any way, you
will get no idea in return—it will be nothing but
federal, or -federalist, or federalism. He resem-
bles more than any other animal, the learned
Elephant, which was exhibited a fewyears since.

tioned or spoken to, and so perfectly had she

Could the History of one rum liogshead, the
destination and effects ofevery drop it contains,
be plainly told, and strongly brought home to his
heart, much would be done, we are per-
suaded. to induce the seller to give up his trade.
And such a thing might be easily done. As the
hogshead is set up in the dram shop, and
made ready lor sale, imagination might easily
picture its work of destruction. There would
be the generous-hearted sailor purchasing mad-
ness and disgrace with his hard earnings :
there is the miserable mechanic, leaving his

these cannot be made evident to the eye of man.
But they may be imagined. A slight acquaint-
ance with the annals of intetnperance, a few
