Presidency. The Quaker state insists ,upon the
honor of furnishing the candidate for that oflice as
her just right, while the Knickerbockers as perti-
nnciously_ adhere to their determination never to
give _up that incomparable patriot and statesman.

yided than inany other town in Connecticut, the
National Republicans elected their whole Ticket
for town officers at their annual meeting last week.
In Missouri, the regular Jackson candidate for
bfember of Congress, in place of Mr. Pettis, has
been defeated, and Gen. Ashley, a moderate Ja.:k-
souian, and the opponentof Col. Benton, elected.

The N. Y. Daily Advertiser of Monday furnish

team days later, The British Parliament was
prorogued by the King in person on the 20th of
October to the 29d November. The speech de-
livered by his Majesty on that occasion announces
the important fact, that the question of Reform will
engage the attention of Parliament at the opening
of the session. Large meetings in favor of per-
servance on the part of the Government in prose-
cuting the plan of Reform, had been held in sev-
eral of the principal towns and cities, and were ex-
pected in others. Much feeling in favor of the
measure was excited, but fortunately no excess of
importance had occurred. It seems to be expect-
ted that the rircasure of Refoi in will befiintroduced
in much the same form that it passed the House of
Commons. This will place it before the Lords en-
cumbered with the same objecions that attended it
when it was rejected by that House. It would
seem from the short period of the recess, that it
must be the intention ofthe. Ministry to resort to an
increase of the number of Peers, to secure the pas-
sing of the bill. The friends of the measure are
zealous in repressing all propensity to riots, or dis-
turbances; and though they intended to persevere
in their courfie, they meant to preserve the peace
and good or er ofthe kingdom.
The affairs of Poland appear to be brought to a
close. Modlin had surrendered to the Russians,
and the Polish forces had been either captured, or
had fled. The power of resistance was gone, and
the pgople were at the mercy oftlreir masters.
Of treachery of a partof the Polish lenders, there
is no longer any doubt. Krokowicki, who took
command of the town after the infamous massacre
of the prisoners by the mob, seems to have acted
a, conspicuous part in the sacrifice of his country.
The general pacific aspect of things through-
out Europe, had produced a favorable effect upon
the money market, the funds having risen in Eng-
land, France. and Holland. This affords decisive
prooftlrat no general war was expected, and as it
regards Great Britain. that no serious commotions
were considered as likely to disturb the peace of
that country.

in consequence of its appearance at Hurnbugrlr.—

The Kentucky papers contain the particulars
of the assassination of Ebenezer N. Robertson
of Kentucky, late a member of assembly in
that state, by Dr. Pierce, new a member.-—
ertson and Pierce were bosom friends : Rob-
ertson had been guilty of an intrigue with
Pierce‘s wife. He had refused a challenge ;
but subsequently agreed to leave the county,
and never return. On the fatal day, Pierce
stepped into the Court house on some occu-
sional business, and to his astonishment found
Robertson there in violation of his pledge.-—
He gazed upon him sharply for a morncrit,and
weiil: out. In a few moments he returned
with a loaded pistol, which he placed near
Roberlsoli’s head, and blew his brains out in
the face of the court, jury and people. Two
attempts have been made to indict him, one
for uiordcr,:iiid the other for manslaughter. In
both instances, the grandjury refused to find
a bill, and Pierce has taken his seat in the le-
gisluture to make laws for securing the peace
of the good people.

' “ The Election of Senators, Members
‘in
trf Assembly, &c. has terminated in the entire and
-triumphant success of Tammany and mobocracy.
The opposition was split into an infinite number
of factions—National Republican, Anti-Masonic,
Anti-Militia, Workies, Fanny Wngbt men or A-
grarians, Independent Republicans.&.c. 81¢. The
apathy was extreme until Tammany raised her
savage war-whoop, when up started her minions
from every den of darkness, and rushed to the polls
to save the dying liberties of their country. Im-
maculate Patriots! Friendsofman! Enlightened,
virtuous, disinterested, immortal Guardians of our
country’s weal! May they receive their rcwarrl.—
I turn from them with a soul sickened at the
thought that the rational liberty, the good order,
and the morality of my country, are the foot-balls
of the scum and filth of earth's most unworthy in-
habitants. Aud yet they swing their greasy caps,
and raise their stinking voices to extol the virtues
oftheir ancestors !—Sad and doleful is the fate of
ancestors to be disgraced by such sons! Little
I complacency, metliinks, would the sages of our
revolution have experienced, could they have pen-
etrated the future, to behold their eulozists in the
stale rabble arid the rugged mob of the Wigwam of
Tammany Hall !
IfI am in a tearing rage with Tammany, I am
almost" as. much disgusted with the endless din
ofAnti-Masonry with which our table is favored
from one week to another; and I hesitate not to
say, that a more wild, foolish. and ridiculous set of
notions never bewildered a man's brain than the
whims of Anti-masonry. The sages N ' " " and
B * * * * have no idea that a dog barks, or a fire
‘snaps, but under the instigation of the infernal ma-
gic of freernasonry. They may say what they will
of Nat Turner, the negro fanatic--he was fit to be
Conservator of the whole Anti-masonic party.
Wprkeyism and Funny Wrightism are happily
fart sinking to their deserved ignominy, and will
probably lie quietly in their graves till Fanny u
gaiiiwaves her wand, and commands the foul spir-
its from the nasty deep. National Republicanism !
alas! it sleeps in this city, I fear the sleep of death.
it is too rational, too calm. too much addressed to
man’: reason, and too little stimulating to his par-
sions, to find a foothold among the political fanut_
ics of this city of misrule. The course of our devo-
d country is still down, down from the pinnacle
of true g I istzhicb it was left bywashington.
True, such men-as d Clay have grasp-

"glad to save her from becoming a yictirn to ‘arias-.
chy and licentiousnen ; but the will 0 majori-
ty hangs about her neck like a mill-stonefand still

to sigh for the days now past and gone forever,
when a Washington, an Adams and a" Hamilton
' spoke in the cause of truth, and spoke not in vain.
I am not crazy. You know I was never spe-
ciallycool about politics-so that you will not be
‘frightened by this effusion, which is nothing more

portion of our revenue is derived.
Our population is 298,449. The average
proportion ofthe expense of government air-
irually, is 25 cents for each person, but the av-
erage proportion of the State Tax is only 12
and a half cents.
The fund for the support of Common
Schools amouiitsto $1,902,957, a portion of
which i not now productive. The amount
0flllI.el‘CSl distributed to the schools in 1830,
was $77,333——bi.-iiig equal to a dividend _of
more than 25 cents to every inhabitant of the
state.
Probably the annals of the world do not pre-
sent a similar instance. We here have u gov-
ernment which after paying all expenses, re-
turns to the citizen more than double the a-
mount he has been taxed. instead of being
burthened with taxes a bounty is bestowed on
our inhabitants.
The storm of the 21st and 22:1 ult. extend-
ed from Cape Hatteras to Penobscot , and
through all its range, it exhibited the same
phenomena, lightning. thunder, snow,hail and
rain.
Chesapeake on Monday night ; and 00 T985-
day morning the tide rose at Portland,Marne,
higher than can be recollected by the oldest
inhabitant. Immense damage was done to
whurves and shipping. The papers all along
the shore speak of it as a storm of tremendous
violence; the lightning was exceedingly vi-
vid at Richmend,Virgima; churches and oth-
er buildings were struck in the eastern part
of Muss.; while in Vermont. and at Wash-
mgion City, on Tuesday morning, the whole
(.‘\.!II1II'_V was covered with the snowy mantle

The three citizens of Maine who were ‘rm-

have been released at the suggestion Of the
minister at Washington. They are said to

of a new and beautiful edition of the Orations
of Demosthenes, translated by Dr. Leland,
and constituting the 3d and 4th vols. of Harp-
ers' Classical Library. We are therein fur-
nished with the ten orations against Philip,
six others on occasions of public deliberation,
that of ./Eschines against Clesiplron, and the
reply by Demosthenes; also a short biograph-
ical sketch ofthe great Athenian declaimer;
an interesting preface, giving a view of the
principal states of Greece, and the characters
of her most celebrated . orators ; introductory
historical chapters, and copious explanatory
notes to each oration ; with an appendix rela-
ting to the exile and death of Demosthenes.

As to the volumes before us, it would be i-
dle at this time of day to repeat praises of the
eloqucnceand power of Demosthenes ; but
we may express the wish, that those whose
stations or avucations call them to be speak-
ers"in public, would study at the fountain
head, and strive to acquire something of the
vehement epergy,‘ lucid arrangement, and
methodized argument, carrying conviction a-
long With them, of the master of Greek elo-
quence. All readers of taste will derive satis-
faction from the perusal of these orations ; and
the notes which accompany them. as well as
the preface, gi-vinga sketch of the different
states of Greece, and’ their relation to each
other, explain the various allusions, without
the necessity of consulting Greek history.
