There is a gossipping paragraph in thei last‘Hart-
ford Times, from which‘we"le‘arn that Gen. Dull‘
Green of Wasbington,and su'ndry,resp'ec'tablc' gen-
tlemen of this state, whose‘ names I are delicately
(given, held a meeting at,New Haven during com‘
mencement week, to coufer~-uporrthe expediency
of dropping Mr. Clay, and bringing forward Mr.
Calhoun for the suppprt of the"elector_s of this state
at the ensuing election. Theieasons urged at the
meeting for withdrawing lyIr.Clay were the impos-
sibily of rallying a party, respectablefor :strength
in his behalf; while, if those iopposhd to Gen Jack-
son would unite on Mr. Calhoun, they would ‘take-
off some of General Jackson’s strongest states,-_——
Whether the story in the '.l‘imes~be triidypr nap, we
do not doubt that in due time ~ a‘movemeeiitf'will-be
made in this state in favor of Mr. Calhoun, .His
popularity is daily increasing,and his chance of ob-
taining the Electoralvote of Connecticut islas gourd
as that ofany other candidate. VVhen we say this
we take into view the prospect of Mr. Clay’s be-
ing withdrawn. Already he is announced as a
candidate for the U. S. Senate, which is no mean
indication of the course of the current. An-
. other indication is the recent abandonment of his‘
cause by some of his most ardent fi iends, and the
avowal of Mr. Calhoun, on the part of others, as
their second choice. A few weeks ago we sug-
gested the propriety of uniting both on one ticket,
running Mr. Calhoun for President, and Mi-.Clay
for Vice President. Though some of our Jackson
friends think such a ticket would be an anomaly,
we are fully persuaded it would be more accepta-
ble to the great body of the people than any other
tieket, and what is of some importance, at least,
SAFE AND SOUND PRINCIPLES.

M'Lean would not coinpromit the dignity of the
Judge by assuming the character of the partisan.-
If, amid the hopes and fears, and the strong excite-
ment: of an important and closely contested elec-
tion, in which his own interest was deeply involv-
~ ed, he could wholly divest himself of the feelings
of the partisan, and still exhibit to the world the
.calmness, the dignity, and the disinterestedness, of
the Judge, he must be more than human. And if
i he would not sully the purity of the ermine by an-
tering iuto the political arena, who can answer for
the conduct of other Judges whom such a precedent
would bring into the same field. How long
would it be are the Justices of the Supreme Court
would be the principal competitors in this race for
popular favor, and not only so,but the most violent

Mr. James B. Gardiner has concluded a
very important treaty at Maumee Bay, in
Michigan, for a cession of all the lands
owned by the Ottawa Indians in Ohio, a-
bout 50,000 acres. It was attended with
nyitreaty that has ever been made in thi
State. It was the last foothold which that
savage and warlike and hostile tribe held
in this their ancient dominion; and those
