Among the many remedies proposed for this
distressing complaint none llt1~’. hada more exten

thor rifthis remedy practically anticipated the
views ofifi}~_i.i.ii=ais, in referring dyspesia to gas
troeiiteritic‘ irritatioii. He considered the seat of
the disease the mucus niernbraiie, or, in the lan-
guage of modern anatomy, the digestive tissue,
The remedy is in consonance with this view, and
after long experience, and repeated efforts at im-
provement, is still offered for general use.‘ Ex-
perience, usually, perhaps always, the best guide,
has induced thousands to return to the use ofthe
pills, who have tried and abandoned other reme-
dies. The pills czin be taken without disgust, or
even inconvenience. The character of dyspep,
sin is essentially chronic; it admits of‘ gradual,
not an iiistzmtziiicous cure Perhaps the cure
may be far:iIitated by mechanical means-it cer-
tainly is by temperance, exercise,change of cli-
mate, and by causes that effect the mind; but in
