we rave had the severest Equinoctial gale
that has been experienced for many years.-
It coiiitneticed about the 15th ofMarcli and
raged with little or no intermission until the
5d of April. This furious gust took such ati
effect on a great proportion ofotir iiilialiitauts
that they lost all coiitroiil over their passions,
and gave way to squibbiiig, and deceiving,
and slandering their neighbors, as unreserved
as though they thought it a meritorious act.
They seemed to talk with as iuuch good sense
and feel themselves as lawless as a flock of
geese (with once in a while an important
china gander among them.) But this tornado
has blown its blast, Ibelieve, without tuaterial
injury to the public, tliotigli it may have gal-
}ed the feelings of some individuals a little

The Election is now over and we soon shall
know who is Governor, and the people begin
again to think it criminal to tell absolute lies,

on any other principle than Politics, and that

quility once more to be restored, witliout dan-

Rock Blasting.——A most remarkable exhi-
bition ofthe force ofpoivder iii rending rocks
recently occurred in Marbletown, on the line
of the Hudson and Delaware Canal. If the
facts stated in the Ulster Plebian are well
founded, and we doubt not they are,_it was
the greatest blast on record. The rock was
40 feet high, between 20 and 80 feet wide, 8::
projected over the Rotidout creek, clearintz
the ordinay surface ofthe water about 5 feet.
“An Irishman, named Patten happening to
be oti the spot where it was bedded, as a vis-
itor, was offered 55 by the contractor of that
section to give it a blast, under the expecta-
tion of being availed, at least, to that amount
by the fraguieirts be calculated mightbe blown
from it. Patten having accepted the offer,
bored a hole in the rock, in which he put 70
pounds ofpowder, and then applied to it the
lighted torch, in the presence of numerous
spectators; when behold! the rock was by the
treroentlniis explosion totally dislodged from
its lied, overturned and placed so exactly on
the bank of the canal, as to prove a stibsiitute
for its enibankmeiit, equal to its diiriensioiis.
So that the blast was worth to the contractor
not less than 3100. It is worthy of remark
that a sliver ofthis rock. of the bulk of about
3 feet square, having been sent high in the
air by the explosion, descended in the earth
