Canal Disaslcr.—-A space of about 80 feet

on the banks oftlte Canal, a few tniles above

the Scltoltarrie Creek suddenly gave way a

few days since, while the boat‘Smnuel Young’
was passing. About otte third of the boat
swung out, while the other lliirds remained in
the Canal.—It is expected the breach will
50(1) be repaired.

sloop lock, with from 600 to 700 barrels of

The reports relative to the nuhealtbiness of
the station at Key West, have induced the
Goveruuteut to send out forthwitlt, a special
mission to examine the causes of the disease
prevailing there, and to take sttcli tneasures as
the good of the service may require. Com.
Rodgers has volunteered his services on the
occasion, and will be accompanied by four of
the oldest surgeons of the Navy. If expcpi-
ent, the squadron will be removed to Pensa-

Vv'c learn, says the Buffalo Journal, Sept.
Elfltlt, that when the storm oftlte 7th inst.eom-
tttenced, Major Keeler, fortnerly of Ononda-
go county, in this state, was passing with a
daughter, 16 years of age, iii an open boat,
from one of the Put-in-bay islands to Port
Lawrence. \Vlien about 9.0 miles on their
way, the boat was wrecked on the ‘ \Vcstern
Sister,’ a desolate island, of about I00 acres.
With an old axe, the crew hollowed a log to
serve fora bo:tt—aud when the gale was over,
two persotts were dispatched in it for assis-
tance. They returned in time to save the lives
ofthe Maj. and his daugltter,wlto had subsisted
six days entirely on snakes and snails.
