moves that drowsiness which on some occasions
will prevail in spite of our utmost ellorts to baffle
it. by repeated experiments, it is known to be of
essential service to those who are troubled with

In cases of catart h or what is commonly called a
cold in the head, a pinch or two taken at night
on going to bed will, by moistening the mucus,
ellectually remove all obstructions before morn-
ing. All those troubled with the hypochondria
or vapors, will find in this chemical preparation a
complete antidote. All sedentary and studious
persons ol either sex will find by its occasional
use, acheap and cheering relief from that lassi-
tude which invariably accompanies a long -sitting

Though this destructive accidenfitvas métitinn -
ed in all the journals ofthe time when it mote
place, yet no connected narrative off: has agppcar.
ed in any English publication. On the 12th at
January, i807, a vessel loaded with gun-piowder
entered one of the finest canals ofthe city of Le,-.‘
den, in the Rapenburg, a street inhabited by the
most respectable families._ This vessel was made
fast to a tree in front of the house of Professor
Ran, of the Uiiiversity. In Holland almost every
street has a canal in the middle, faced with a wall
up to the level of the street,,and with lime tre-,:_.-,
planted on both sides, which produce at most beau-
tiful effect, besides forming a delightful shade in
hot weather. Vessels ofall kinds are frequentlv
moored to these trees, but Leyden being an inland
town, the greater part which were in the Rapen-
burg were country vessels. Several yachts be-
longing to parties of pleasure were lying close to
the ill—fated VCSSCL and as no person was aware of
the destructive cargo it contained, all were in per.
fect security. _
About a quarter past 4, P. M. the awful catas-
trophe took place. It would be useless to attempt
a desbription of the awful moment. A student
of the university passing. through a street from
which he sawthe whole, related to us the follow-

mournfully through the air, but it seemed as if
none could answer the dreadful question. But at
last, when the black cloud which had enveloped
the whole city had cleared away a little, the awful
truth was revealed, and soon all the inhabitants of
the city were seen rushir'_ o the ruins to assist
the sufferers. There were five large schools on
the Rapenburg, and all at the time full of chil-
dren. The horror of the parents of these yotith-
ful victims is not to be described or even. imagin-
ed ; and though many of them '.vcrt-: saved almost
miraculously, yet no one dared to hope to see his
child drawn alive from a heap of smoking ruins.

was animated with one common‘ soul in extt-icating
the sufferers from the ruins, and stopping the
progress of the flames. None withdrew from the
awful task, and the multitude increased every mo-

country, the explosion having been heard at the
distance of 50 miles. Night now set in, the dark-
ness of which, added to the horrors of falling: hou-

night. Louis Bonaparte, then king of Holland 3t'~
rived. Louis was much beloved by his subjects,
and his name is still mentioned by them Will! re

ers, and did not leave the place till he had estab-
lished good order, and promised every assi..tanco

Some degree of order having been restored, the
inhabitants were divided into classes, not accord-
ing to their rank, but the way in which they were
employed about the ruins. These classes were
distinguished by bands of different colors tied a-
round their arms. The widcly extended ruins
now assumed the appearance" of hills and valleys,
covered with workmen producing to the eye an
ever-varying scene ol'tlii?ereo‘t occupations. The

To relate every ‘tale of woe’ connected with
this terrible occurrence would exceed our limits,
but certainly one of the most affecting was the
fate of the pupils of the difiercnt schools on the
Rapenburgh. At the fatal moment, the wife of
the principal of the largest of them was standing
at the door with her child in her arms ; she was
instantly covered with the falling beams Ezbricks,
the child was blown to atoms,and she was thrown
under a tree at some distance. Part of the floor
of the school room sunk into the cellar, and twelve
children were killed instantly--and one was heard
to cry - Help me, help me, I will give my watch
to my delivcrcr.’ Fathers and mothers rushed
from all parts ofthe city to seek their children,
but after digging five hours they found their labor
fruitless. and Some were even obliged to leave
the spot in this ind35CV1l>8ble state of suspense, to
