The Osages and Cherokees have just commen-
ced hostilities. The osages. a short time since.
made an attack on a party of Cherokee hunters.
killed two, wounded some others, and tooktlicir
horses, Szc. This took place at the Oporto, and
not fat‘ from the garrison. I understand the gov-
et‘nor (who was then in that country-, where he had
been since the first ofNorc mbei‘) told the Chero-
okees to protect tlieniselves. This is what they
have been wanting for some time. I am told that
the Shawanese and Delaivares, now on their wa)‘
from Indiana to settle in this country) will join
the Clierokees. It is very probable the Osugcs
will be completely driven off. it is the intention
of the Clier‘0ltces to possess their country if pos-
sible, and l have no doubt they will eflicct their‘
object. The Missionaries to the Usage nation
started from the Little Rock on the 12th inst. but
hearing of the hostilities betweeii the Osages and
Clierokeesr, liave stopped a_r;ain ; they are now
waiting for the Governor to come dowit, to ;_.;Ct

vinced, that they never would become profitable

simplilicatioii we believe to li:—ivc taken place. Mr‘.
MINUS VV’Aitn, an ingenious townsmen of ours,
has contrived to dispense with almost every artic-
le of machinery except the boiler, the cylendcr,
and the water wheel. He places the cylencler
within thewatei‘ wliecl itself. It revolves upon
its own centre of gravity; but its centre of revo-
lution is dillerent fi‘om that of the revolution of
the water-wlicel. The piston-rod is the pitniau-
rod. It operates directly upon the wlieelz and
while it forces that around, is itself carried l‘0lln(l.
The steam passes through the gtitlgeon, on which
the wheel revolves; and is conrlucted to and from
the cylendcr by means of tubes and stationary and
rotary valves. The reader will, of course, con
ceive but an imperfect idea of the machine from

this morning. Many other persons have come
from thence, and they all represent the town to

wife, with two men belonging to the schooner,
