Singular occurrcnce.—The following singular
fact, which occurred about three weeks ago, will
probably become a subject of disctission in the
courts, in the course of the approaching term‘.-n
Mr. T-—-, a gentlemen of fortune, had for some
' time paid his'add_i'esses to Miss S--, the clziiigliter
of a respectable merchant in the city. A mutual
attachment existed, and a day was fixed for the
nuptials taking place, when Mr. T—«- suddenly
withdrew himself, and went to the continent.-.-
The young lady’s health suffer;-cl severely for
some time. At length, on getting somewhat bet-
ter, the commands of her father, aided by the
persuasion of her friends. induced her to consent.
to marry a gentlemen every nay eligible, who
had long solicited, her hand. ' ‘hr day appointed
for the nuptials arrived : the parties, attended by
their mutual friends. repaired to the church ; the
ceremony was performed, and they were about to
quit the altar, when the appearance of Mr. 'l“——,
in the aisle, had such an efiect on the bride, that
she fainted, and was conveyed home in that state,
no one of the party, excepting her father, sus-
pecting the cause. On her recovering I-er scu-
ses, soon after her arrival at home, she bioke zi-
way from her friends, who surrounded her, seized

against herself, and those who had been the des-
troyers of her happiness. She was di:arme(l and
put to bed ; and towaids night, becoming more
moderatc and tranquil, she was left, at her own

her cliambcr was found empty. A letter on her

him she had quitted the house, accompanied by

A melancholy instance of the danger of pre-
cipitate interment lately took place in the city of
Pan. A man who had been deaf and dumb from
his birth, and who followed the trade of a farri;-r,
went out to sup with a party of friends. Having
drank a great qtiantity of brandy, he l)t'("dI'11C a-
lainiingly ill on his return home; a physician
ii as sent for, who administered some potions,
which, how ever, produced no effect. In a short:
time all signs oflife ceased, the unfortuiiate man
was stipp0'.~.ed to be dead, and the funeral took

A Bordeaux paper has published the following
Proclamation by Quiroga, chic-fofthe Spanish in-
surgents, addressed to the troops in Andalusia :—..
‘ Soldiers! Placed at your head by the choice
oftlie officers oftlie aimy,_I shall speak to you
with that frankness which ought to exist between
companions in arms.
‘ Our Spain is on the verge of destruction_., your
ruin would be completed by that of the country ;
you were destined to death, more for the purpose
of relieving the government fiom the di;ead inspi-
red by your courage, than to make a conquest of
the Colonies—u thing which is now become ini-
possible. In the mean time, your families rc-
maiiied in the most merciless slavery, undera
tyranical and arbitrary government, which dispo-
ses a_t will of the properties, the existence, and
the libeitics of the unhappy Spaniartls.
‘Soldiers, this government was about to de-
sti'oy the nation. and ends by desiioying itself.-—
It was not possible any longer to endure its sway.
On the one hand, violence and weakness. and on
the other, only indignation and contempt weie
provoked, whilst to render the nation happy, the
government ought to inspire coiifitleiice, love and
respect.
Soldiers, let us employ for our welfare and
that ofour countrymen. the arms'which liau: se-
cured the indepeudence of the nation agaiiist the
power of Biionaparte ; the enierprize is easy and
glorious. Does there exist a Spanish soldier who
will oppose our views? No! in the vary ranks
of those whom the goveriiment may assemble,
you will find brothers who wilfjoin us; and if
some base-born-‘miscreants shoulcl dare to tui-n
their arms againstyou, let llicm peiisl; as the sa-
tclliles of tyranny should do, uniioithy the name
of Spaniards!
‘Soldiers, I depend upon you ; you are the
worthy children of the country; juszify your-
selves as such. Union and discipline-i‘nis is
what lrecommend to you. I shall have the sat-
isfaction of rccompensing those who may distin-
guish themselves; but if any one forgets his duty,
1 shall prove that authority has not been confided
to me in vain, and that the encrg_v of a govern-
ment, which seeks good, is always superior to
that of despots.
‘ Soldiers, victory awaits our banners, and in
her train, the glory and rewards which the coun-
try will lavislily bestow.
