“The'd.weIling-house of Mr. Stoddard, of-. Hills-
dale, was struck with lighining, on the afternoon
of the 7th inst. and himself and daughter(a young
woman) were both killed--they were the only
persons inhabit-ating the house, and the distress-
ing accident was not‘ discovered until the (lay fol-
lowiug, when one ofthe neighbors entering the
house found them lifeless on the floor——the young
woman having in her hand a part of the machine-
ry of arspinning wheel, ‘with which it is suppo-
sed she . hadbeen at. work. VVe did not learn

On the night of the 5th inst. the shock of an
earthquake was experienced at New-Bedford,
Newport, VVestport, and other places in that vi-
cinity. It commenced with a heavy explosion
and was succeeded by a loud rumbling noise
which with the shock ‘continued about two min-

ing General, the Companies composing the
1st Regiment of Artillery in this state; will pa-
rade in Killingsworth, on the 6th and 7th of Oct.
next, for Inspection and Review. For the ac-_
commodation of the companies of this and the
neighboring towns, the sloop Packet, S. DASKAM,
Master, will leave Norwalk, on Monday even-
ing, the -tth of October, for the above place.——
Other persons, desirous of attending the train-
ing, will find a cheap and agreeable mode of con-
veyance, by applying to the Captain.
