Saving Socz'cty.—-'l‘he Hartford Saving Bank,
incorporated by the Legislature at their last ses-
sirrn, conrmenced its operations in Hartford on
\Vedn'esday last. Its success has equalled the
most sanguine expectations of its friends. Nu-
. merousxleposits were made ; and one laboring fe-._
male, in particular,~deposited the sum of $o'5, the
savingsof less thtin three years. Two children,
arise, from four to six years ‘of age, deposited $4

‘ We have daily reports from Madrid ; but al-

thought that his Catholic Majesty will take his
own time to ratify the Florida treaty. ’ The peo-
ple here have a prejudice against the Americans.
A striking instance of this occurred to day ;_ it
was the king's birth day, and the Spanish men of
war were arrayed in the flags of the ‘difl‘e_rent na-
tions. ‘The English, French, Dutch and other"
bugs held 'a7di,stinguished place in_the rigging;
but the stars and broad stripes of Columbia were
omitted. Our ship was decked late in the after-
noort-_-;-anel, t'o"mortify them, the Spanish flag was

afraid, however, that these fellows did not under-
stand ‘oiirintention, but thought we designedlto
to them. They have -an idea

much longer; forl have no desire to be where

vost, an agent of the United States, at Valpara-
iso,__on his return from the mouth of Colunibia
River; It is said that our government has re-
ceived from hima highly interesting report of
that part of his mission. - _VVc do not know wheth-
er-itf°‘isi=in’tendetl to be published ; but, if it were,
we'at"e persuaded it would be very generally ac-
ceptable. Vrfe want such a document, to make
us acquainted with that most important though re-
mote section of the Republic. We even hope
that Mr. Provost will bring back with him mate-
rials to furnish a volume on‘ the subject, instead
of a letter of a few pages, and that ‘he will_ rrogtg
withhold from his countrymen the fruits of his
enquiries and observations. It will not be in the
' power, if it were the wish ofthe Atlantic states,
to prevent the g_l:_owth of a. powerful commercial
' state at the mouth and on the banks of the Co-
lumbia. All the information respecting the
country, which we can obtain, is therefore desi-

the name of Peter Jackson. arrived here _a few
days since in the ship Malabar from Bombay.
after having been long supposed to have been bu-
ried in the depths of the ocean,antl administration‘
taken out in consequence upon his estate, and his
worldly accounts settled in due and legal form.
His story is this :-—'Peter- was cook on_ board the
brig Cer'es, ofthis port, Joseph Strout,’ jun. inas-
ter, on her voyage to Calcurta._ In coming down
Calcutta river, when neartlie Sand-heads, at the
mouth of the river, the Ceres was over'taken by
a violent storm of wind, accompanied with thun-
der and liglrtning, which threw the brig on her
beam-ends, and at the‘ same time she struck a-
ground on the sand~bar -, and after beating over
into deep water, 5l1t:il'l_glilc(l and proceeded on
her voyage. At the time when the Ceres was
ltrrocked down, Peter fell overboard. and all ex-
crtioirs -to recover him proved unavailing; the
title was running rapidly at the time out of the
river, and Peter, having got hold of a steering-
sail boom ‘which was; thrown to him among other
things, was floated down the, river about seven
miles from the place where he fell overboard.

This is by no means an unprecedented occur-
rence, and should operate as a caution against re-
movingthe skins of such animals as die sudden-
ly, and of unknown diseases. _
At St. Albans,’V‘er'rnout, on the 51
Hydrophobic, the only son of Mr. Lyman VVeed,
aged 12 years._ The boy was bitt.err.abot1t three
months prior to the attack of the disease, by a
cat which was supposed to be mad. The cat was
killed ; and as the wound in the hoy’s hand rapid-
ly healed, the parents were left in a state of false
security until the terrific appro-.ich_of this fatal
complaint. The patient cornpfained fitist of pain
in the hand which had beenbitten,which was‘ soon
conveyed to the arm, shoulder, neck, Sec. ‘ This
was followedby a difliculty in swallowing liquids
which produced severe spasms in his throat.-—
He was _constantly exercised with indiscribable
distress, and was very restless. His paroxisms
of distresswas mostly in the afterriooii and’ dur-
ing the night, when he was attended with the

seize the bed clothes with his teeth, and once di-
rected his attendants to stand back, or he should
bite them. Occasionally he made the most he-
dious noises, and, although the idea :zppears ludi-

was almost incessantly throf$%g out his tongue,
as if attempting to clear his mouth of its viscid
saliva. He sometimes had intervals of reason,
and these were the only times when .he could

ny, and called forth the whole powers of his body’
in his own defence. In‘ this deplorable condition
he continued till the 8th day, and sunk under the
