which their government was at peace.’ Earl
Batlturst also remarked that * it appeared in evi-

they had-identified themselves with the Indians,
having made common cause with them, and that

American government, without endangering the
peace which happily subsisted between the two

‘ The President, last week, passed through the
Cherokee ‘nation on the road leading from Geor-
gia. to Nashville. I am informed that he visited
the Missionary School, where about sixty Indian
Children were receiving instruction on the Lan-
casterian plan. This must have been interesting

abundance of fruit and bread. The Bankers and
Brokers have no effect on vegetation; and we

The keelof a 74 gun ship was laid at the Navy
‘Yard, Portsmouth, week before last.
Locusts have appeared in great numbers in
Louisiana ; but have done no injury. I
Hurricarzes an-:1 Hail ‘Scornzs.—- l‘ he town of
Leesburg, Virginia, a few days since, was visited
by a dreadful hurricane, which blew down several
houses ; -and several were struck with lightning.
A severe hail storm was recently experienced
at Jamaica, Long-Island. In the east part of the
village, many panes of glass were broken, gar-
dens destroyed, and fields of grain almost ruined.
VVe have already noticed the tremendous hail
storm which took place in Saratoga county, and
now ubsct'\'t: in the Saratoga Sentinel a particu-
lar description of its ravages. Its width was a-
bout 2 miles, and its length above 50. Groves
of timber were levelled——o’rchards ruined and
grain dcstroyetl. A barn was burnt by lightning,
and a large quantity of grain consumed. In the
. village at the springs, 4689 ‘panes of glass were
broken, and in manyinstances windows forced in,
and furniture injured by torrents of rain and hail.

land at the price of 8 pounds per‘ ton, or one sev-

VVindsor, on the evening of the 7th inst. San-
ford Kingsbury, and Joseph Blodget, agreed
that if they could borrow each of them a gun, to
repair to the fields the next-morning, and kill
some birds which had been destroying their corn.
The muskets being soon procured, they met
each other in the street, when Kingsbury, in a
playful manner says to Blodget, ‘ we have each
of us a gun in our hands, let us fight a duel.’-—
Blod get consented, the pieces were cocked and
preseuted at each other’s head, andboth snapped
at the same instant. The gun which Blodget
had procured appears to have been loaded that
day by one of the neighbors, at the request of the
owner’s boy, to kill a bird ; but not finding any
game, the boy placed the gun in the same spot"
where his father had left it. Its contents was
lodged in Kingsbui-'y’s head, and he expired in a-
bout 40 minutes. The boy that was shot was a
son of Mr. Sanford Kingsbury, of VVarchouse-
Point, aged 15 ; the other a son of Mr. Joseph

Distrcssing Occurrence.--—On Saturday, the
will inst. a party consisting of six persons. (viz.
Messrs. Samuel VVhitiug, ——Fisk, Adam
Love, ‘William Love, Simeon Jones, and
\~Veavcr,) went from Long-\Vharf, in a small
boat, on a clamming excursion. The afternoon
was boisterous. At a distance of about 3 miles’
from the wharf, and nearly midway between the
beach and the light house, a sudden flaw struck
the boat which carried her gunwale under:—--be-
ing ballasted with stone, she immediately filled
and sunk. Wltitiiig, Fisk and A. Love were
drou-ned—thc remaining three saved thetnselvcs
by swimming. Mr. Vl/Ihiting, we believe, is the
only one who has a family :—’—-it is remarkable that

On the 17th inst. a black man at New-York
went into the l\"orth River to bathe. After swim-
ming a few rods he was observed by spme boys
to sink. An alarm was given, a few-persons ran to
the spot, but could see no signs of the man. A,
young lad, bolder than the rest, plunged in at ven-
ture, and fortunately came in contact with the
drowning man, and succeeded in drawing him on
shore. He had been in the water from 10 to is
minutes, and was apparently _a lifeless corpse.-—
The means necessary for resuscitation were im-.
mediately applied and continued by Dr. Ste-arns
Ibr four hours. In thirty minutes he began to
breathe regularly ; in three hours he opened his
eyes, and in four hours he was able to speak.-—
This case is another evidence of the necessity of
unremitting perseverance in the use of means,
till life is restored.

my son, between 16 and_ 17‘ years of
a painful and sore leg. After having tried vari-
ous medicincs without effect, I was induced from
seeing many reported cures, to try ‘ Dr. llclfe’s

when to the astonishment of myself, son and
friends, after taking these drops alone for several
