A distressing fire happened at Saranr'iah_on the
night of the 17th inst. and a number of buildings
destroyed, near the wharves. The loss of‘pt‘0l3'
erty estimated at about one hundred and fifty
thousiaiid dollars. The greater part of the ‘pro-

The Montreal papers state, that “ a very des-
tructive epidemic is now raging.at Laprairie, by
which many children have been lost, and thirty
were sick with" the alarming tlisorcler.
A very destructive and infectious disease cal-
led the Bloody Murrain, exists among the cattle
in a part of_ Chester county, Pennsylvania;
The ship Ann, Crocker, has arrived at New-
York from Liverpool, but brings no later advices
‘than via. Norfolk. The Gazette observes, that
“ The King of England had stumbled over _a
chair, and hurt: his left leg-—an alteration in his
regimen and diet was ordered. His only exer-
cise was a wheeling about in a garden chair. It
was apprehended his dissolution was fast ap-
proaching.” . ' '
It is stated, says a London paper, on the autlior:
ity of letters from a Missionary at Malta, that
nine men, beltangihg to the different British ves-
gels lying ‘ai ' myrna, had fzublicly denied Jesus
Chris: the r of the world, and had embra-
ced Mahometanism! I This practise amongthe
English sailors, thesame letter adds, was becom-

from the main hotly which continued luminous
at a considerable distance from it.—-Stones de-
nominated meteoric, were very probably disenga-
ged, at the time of the sparkling, which fell to
the earth; but I have not learnt that any have
been discovered.
‘ About three minutes after. the meteor disap-
peared a sound éoinmenced, nearly over head,_
resembling thunder, giving in succession a num-
ber of distant reports like the-discharge of can-
non at a distance, aridpassing off-iii, the direction
of the meteor. Many p,ersons,=_heard the reports
who did not_see the meteor, and thoslght it to he ~
