A letter from Liverpool of the 22d of Janua-
ay states, ‘ that on the previous day upwards of
80 vessels had sailed from that port to the East
‘Indies, in order to purchase Cotton, and that they
were expected to return in the course of this
year. The writer states that this speculation
is likely to be very unprofitable, as some ships
have arrived loaded with the above freight,—sincc
the other vessels were afloat, and the cotton fetch-
ed no more than 6d. per lb. the cost price in the
East Indies; consequently" the expencesof the
voyage, freight, &c. will fall heavily upon the
merchants.’
An extensive and alarming combination of
Mechanics and Artists, has taken-place in Eng-
land. Theirprofessed objectis to prevent any
’ innovation of their rights and ‘privileges by their
employers. The number regularly enrolled, a-
mounts, it is said, to upwards of 60,000, w-hich
number was to be augmented the last week by a
‘great body of men employed on the banks of the
river. -Delegates are appointed at every mat..=:u-'

following the 15th inst. the H-attersshop of Mr.
Walter Jones, of Ridgefield wasforcibly enteycd,
considerable amount, and the shop set on ~‘fire,
but was discovered in season by Mr. Joncsto pre-
vent its destruction, and. also the extensive estab-
lishment of Mr. Jahez M. Gilbert, as a Tannery,
standing contiguous. The fact was early made
known on Tuesday morning, by Mr. Jones, to the
members of Ridgefield Union Society, who-by
-their characteristic activity, diligence, and perse-
verance, apprehended the villain in less thansix
hours, and recovered the property. After an in-
quiry or examination before Justices Stebbinsand
Hyatt, he was committed, on the most unequivo-
cal testimony of his guilt, to Danburyjztil, to a-
wait his trial before the September term of the
Superior Court. Such are the benefits resulting
to Society from similar associations.

Coasting Trade.--By the recent modification
the coasting business between any ports of the
union lying in the Atlantic without undergoing
the expense and trouble of clearance at the Cus-
tom-House. ~
Green Peas.—-This vegetable, syas the Charles-
ton City Gazette of the" 8th inst. was-brought to
our market on Saturday last for the first time
this year. They were sold at the rate of twelve
dollars a bushel. ‘
Sufzcrstz'tion.—A Plattsburgh paper of the 29th
ult. relates an instance of superstitious credulity
very rarely to be met with in modern times. At
Chazy, on the 23d ult. the body of a Mr. Stephen
Vvoodward, who was buried about 18 months
since, and who died of a consumption, was taken _
up and his l.cmnl1)S placed on a pile of fuel, set
on fire, and consumed. The object of the au-
thors of this disreputable transaction, it appears,
‘was to prevent the further progress of the con-
sumption in the family, of which Mr. VV. was a

About 22 months since, PHILIP, aged about

-carbonite of potash (pearlash) which prevented
his swallowing any thing but milk; whic_h he

nourishment, and continued to languish for 30
days, gradually losing the use of his limbs and
senses, till he became senseless, and lost to feel-
ing, his flesh mostly‘ dried up.——Upon examina-
tionafter death, it was found that the oesophagus
(throat) from the larynx to the stomach, was ve-
ry much coated, and in two places almost closed,
so thatit was thought nothing could have passed
into the stomach. The left lobe of the lungs
was very much affected: the lights, the heart
and the liver were perfectly sound, although it was
presumed not a /zint of blood could be found in
_the whole system. '
