tatory, which Tobacco, combined with other in-
gredients, is capable ofproducing. The common
-Scoth snuff is not only destitute of fine flavor,
but is universally allowed to be injurious to the

umeration of the articles composing your snuff,
together with a sample ofit, I would remark, that
although I have found no reason for changing my
well known opinion of the pernicious effects of
theinordinate use of tobacco, in any form, Inev-
erthcless cannot perceive the same objection to
yours. The articles are certainly innocent in
their qualities. Those liable to nervous and oth-
er head-aches well know that fits of these dis-
tressing affections, most commonly subside on a
spontaneous sneezing towards night, and if this
reliefcan be expedited by a sternutatory, I should
give the preference to your snuff over that of
Snufl‘, the ingredients of which are unknown to
us. \Vith this view I have used your composi-
tion myself, and recommended it to others.

Brig General Rifzlcy, who arrived at Charleston
on the 14th inst. in 19 days from Rum Key, Ba-
hama, informs, that on the 26th and 27th of Oc-
tober, a tremendous hurricane was experienced
at the Bahama Islands, which provetl very de-
sttfuctive to the Wreckers on the coast. During-
the gale on the 27th, the, Spanish schooner Ya"-
bolato, Capt. Francisco, with too slaves on board
from the coast of Africa, stranded on the Baha'-
mas, and‘ all hands perished, except the captain,
one seaman and I8 slaves. There were several
other vessels cast away the same day '; the
wrecks of them were seen floating about the Is-
lands for four or five days previous to the sail-
ing of the General Ripley, The day before
capt Drew left Rum-Key, at Providence VV.reck-
er arrived at that place, and reported that the a-
bove mentioned gale was very severely felt at
Nassau, (N. P.) and that considerable damage
had been sustained along the coast’.
Nov. 25.
VVe noticed a few weeks since, an invention
introduced into our City by lvlr. Evrard, for
sweeping chimnies by lvlacbinery-—V’Ve are hap-‘
py to learn, from gentlemen who have seen it u-
sed, that it promises to succeed. Vl’c“under-
stand that morethan twenty of-the chimney lines
in the'City Hotel, which wohld not admit ‘climb-
ing boys,’ were swept by the machinery yester-
day, to the entire satisfaction of the‘ keeper of
that establishment.
The French brig Minerva, was to sail from
Havre about‘-the--‘ 12th of October for Mobile;
with about 50 passengers, most of them Mechan-
ics, who design to settle in that promising place.

The above census was taken in the month of
September, a season when considerable num-
bers were absent on business. At the period
of their return, with the great increase of new
settlers, consisting ofmcrchants, mechanics fam-
ilies, &c. which are known to have sailed from
this port, Philadelphia, Baltimore, l’rovi(lenc,c
andvlioston, it is supposed-the population will
be nearly doublein the month of December.

On Monclay the 9th inst. in the ca-rlv nor! of
the evening, John C. Clark, a mason by ‘trade,
living near Mid(lletown,in the town of \Vallki‘3l,
was accidentally shot by Matthew lvloore. It ap-
pears, Mr. Moore and his brother-in-law had
been from home, and returning in the evening
with their dogs and guns, were suddenly stop-
pcd by the barking of the dogs around a tree,
some distance from them-—-there was not a sulfi-
ciency oflight, to enable them to- discover what
the object was, concealed behind the tree, but’
from the circumstance of the dogs refusing to
attack it, they supposed it must be a bear, and
Moore discharged his piece, which was loaded
with shot, reserving the fire of his l)t'0thet‘-ln-
law, until the bear should attack them.-—lt would
be vain to attempt to describe tlieiffeclings, when
instead of a bear, they beheld a man spring from
behind the tree, and with a deep groan fall to the
ground. After they had recovered a little from
the shock, they conveyed him to a~ house, and
sent for -a surgeon: ne bled freely, and some
hopes are entertained of his recovery. Only a
part of the charge entered his breast and shoul-
der, the rest lodged in a splinter of the tree.-—
Clark, we understand, had had a quar1't:l with a
turbulent old woman in the neighborhood, it ho
had sworn the peace against him, and he had
concealed himself behind the tree to lteep out
of the way of the constable, who he supposed
was after him.
Singular Preservation.-—'l’lie following cir-
cumstance, says the Roc/Icslrr Ttlegrajz/1, took
place at Carthage on Tuesd;:y last. A Mr. John-
son, was on the end of the level which hung o-
ver the precipice in the act of raising a stick of
timber, the end of the lever gave way and he
was precipitated down the bank 130 feet; he
struck twice on the projecting rocks before he
reached the bottom. VVe are informed that
none of his bones were broken, and that he is in
a fair way of recovery.

‘ form and comeliness, of a beautiful BUCK.——
This rare creature was soon broughtto the ground
and borne to the village, the triumphant prize of
Dr. V.‘ Holcomb and Mr. J. K. Gross.

A waggon load of coloured persons, taken out
of this state since the passing of the late law
prohibiting the slave trade, has been stopped at
Reading, Penn. and brought back to Easton,
where the subject is under legal investigation.-—
They were destined, it is said, to the Alabama.
