tant branch of human knowledge. How invalu-
able would be the acquisition to the libraries of
Americans could they even now be furnised with
mere Sketches of the LIVES of the ‘Members of
the ‘‘.OLD CoNGnEs5,"’ and of the “ REVOLU-
TIONARY PATRIOTS ?” Their memories will al-
ways survive, but their lives are unknown. The
object of the proposed work is to furnish a suc
cinct Biography of Major General ANDREVV
JACKSON. It is understood thata largework
has recently been published, giving the life of
this Glli-1Af1“MAN. It has not been seen by the
aut__hoi' of the work here proposed. His unvary-
plain, unvarnished narrative, of an American
Hero. who has so nobly aided in the security of

confidence, that the'Light-house at St. "Agnes, is
not of more consequence to shipping in general,

150 vessels lying there wind-bound. Now, sir,
suffer me to ‘ask, is such a body of men, with their

nets for the mackerel and pilchard fisheries; but
besides this, it would be necessary to give them
boats ; for those which they forinerly possessed,
have all been driven ashore, or taken by the pre-
ventive men.
I grant that the owners of the boats were smug-
glers; but must they and their families perish
for such a fault? Five hundred or a thousand
pounds would relieve their distress, and put them
in a way of at least procuring some means of liv-
ing by the fisheries ; and the government, I trust,
would adopt regulations which, without promo-
ting smuggling, would allow these poor people to
derive support from honest industiy. To neg-
lect them a month or two longer, will, I am fully

forever their native country, and embark for A-

This kind of food indeed few of them can taste ;
their potatoes are nearly exhausted; this is the

The-following anecdote will speak more power-
fully than Ican, of the distress and patience of
these poor people :—-
Nancy Ellis, one of the scholars belonging to
Tresco Sunday'School, was at the house of a be-
nevolent person one evening, when the good man

toes nor bread, "and I have cat nothing but lim-
