THE importance of Bioeimriiv, has been so
often urged, that it would be useless to urge it in
this place. Next to history, it is the most iinpor-
tant branch of human knowledge. How invalu-
able would be tlie acquisition to the libraries of
Americans could they even now be furnised with
mere Sketches of the LIVES of the Members of
the“ OLD Coi~ioitEss,” and of the “ Ri-:voLu-
TIONARY Pivrniors ?” Their memories will al-
ways survive, but their lives are unknown. The
object of the proposed work.‘ is to furnish a suc
cinct Biography of Major General ANDREVV
JACKSON. It is understood that a large work
has recently been published, giving the life of
this GREAT MAN. It has not been seen by the
author of the work here proposed. His unvary-
ing object will be to present the reader witha
plain, unvarnished narrative, of an American
Hero, who has so nobly aided in the security of
the Independence acquired by the exalted patriots
in the Army of the Revolution. His memoirs
ought. to be in the hands of every American.

Scoth Snuff is not only destitute of line flavor,
but is universally allowed to be injurious to the
head and stomach, and sooner or later effects the

deaden them ; and in process of time, by stop-

of essential service to those who are troubled with
long, dull, nervous head-aches, and will be found
far superior for this purpose to theCephalicSnulf.
In cases of catarrh, or what is commonly called
a cold in the head, a pinch or two taken at night
on going to bed, will, by moistening the mucus,
effectually remove all obstructionsbefore morn-
ing. All those troubled with the hypochondria‘
or vapors, will find in this chemical preparation,
a complete antidote. During a tedious confiiie-
ment in a crowded house, or a warm atmosphere,--
after a fatiguing walk, or a long ride, a pinch or
two of this Snuff will by its grateful and enliven-
ing qualities, richly repay the purchaser the
trouble of constantly having it in his pocket, and
which, when well secured, will, for a long time,
answer all the purposes of a smelling bottle.—-
From its great antiputrescent qualities, no com-
position is better qnalifiedto resist contagion ; the
use of it therefore is indispensable for all those
who watch with, or visit the sick. All sedentary
and studious persons of either sex, will find by its
occasional use, a cheap and cheering relief from
that lassitude which invariably accompanies a
long sitting, or much reading. This Snuff, the
fragrance of which is derived altogether from the
natural flavor of the principal articles of which it
is composed, is well stop: in a handsome squaie
bottle, made expressly for the purpose, and which

Sz'r—In answer to your letter containing an en-
umeration of the articles composing your Snuff,
together with a sample of_it, l would remark, that
although I have found no reason for changing my
well known opinion of the pernicious effects of
the inordinate use of tobacco, in any form, I nev-
yours. The articles are ‘certainly innocent in
their qualities. Those liable to nervous and oth-
er head-aches well know that fits of these dis-
tressing affections, most commonly subside on a
spontaneous sneezing towards night, and if this
relief can be expedited by a sternutatory, I should
give the preference to your Snuff over that of
powdered tobacco, or even the imported Cc/z/mlic
Snufi‘, the ingredients of which are unknotvn to
us. VVitli this view I have used your composi-
tion myself, and recommendedit to others.
