discovery, on the.we§terh waters, is beyond any
thing that "could, have been conceived probable
ten years ago- Mr. Youhgof Louisville, lien-
tucky, has been in Philadelphia a few weeks en-
gaging workmen for a great undertaking of this
-- kind, and has entered into contracts with Mr.
Carter Vcnduson of this city, _who, with the ne-
cessary workmen, amounting to about 40 experi-
enced hands, have already set bff for Louisville.
They havcilndertakenl to build a steam-boat,
which is to carry between 650 and 700 tons mer-
chandize,«and afford the usual accommodations
‘of steam-boats, on.thc most complete scale for
passengers. Her keel is to be more than 170
feet ; and she is to be afloat in December next,
though at this moment there is not a tree of the
timber felled in the forest, nor a, bolt forged for
her works : the engine alone will ‘cost $20,000;
Mr. Young has some other gentlemen, part of

The Washington City Gazette states, that Mr.
Thomas W. Story, of New-York, has lately ob-
tained letters patent from the United States for a.
.and mechanical powers, by which he proposes toj
supcrcede the Steam Engine. This-machine ex-
plodes the proposition that an increase of power
is a loss of time.
Two Steam Boats were lost on the Mississippi
in May--both of them having struck upon a saw-
ycr-—passenger's, 8tc. saved. They were poor
put on board of another boat, which had been
built for the purpose.
The Buildings for the Public Offices, and the
Centre Building of the Capitol, authorized by an
act, of the last session of Congress, were com-
menced at I/Vashington about the 20th of June.
Extract of a letter dated Havana, Jurzc 2.
“ The drought has been excessive in the coun-
try, andthe coffee plantations have s't'n‘l'ered ex-
tremely ; a. loss of one third of the coming crop
of coffee must ensue by the failure of rain in the
last month. For the last 3 or 44 days we have
had abundant falls of rain—the commencement
of our rainy season and sickness; several cases
of the fever have occurred in the harbor within
these few days past, and the weather is extreme-

Extraordinary Preservation if ./Inimal Flesh. ‘
One of the most wonderful facts that Cuvier
produces to show that the Revolutions of the
earth have been sudden, is the circumstance of
the carcase of a mammoth having been found in
1799, by a Tungurian _Fisherm'a‘fi,- enveloped in
ice. The flesh of this mainmotht was palatable
enough to be eat by dogs ; and yet, according to
Mr, Cuvier, a peroid of s-z'.z-1/zousand ‘years must
have elapsed since the death of the animal ; an
almost incredible period for the preservation of’
