Samuel Brinsmade ; 16, Moses (3). John Reed, Jr., eldest son, named from his father according to the old custom, appears on the Nor walk records first as a voter there in 1694. In Huntington's History of Stamford he is named as a purchaser of land of Stephen Clason of Stamford, 1691, of Cornelius Jones, 1709, and of Jonathan Bates, 1713. Colonial records cite him as admitted to the bar Oct. 7, 1708, and as attorney for the Crown and deputy for Norwalk. The inventory of his estate was filed at Fairfield, Conn., Nov. 12, 1724, and he probably died that year. His wife Elizabeth was the daughter of John jMa ( HISTORY AND GENEALOGY and Kattareen (Lane) Tuttle and granddaughter of William Turtle and wife Elizabeth of New Haven, Conn. iShe belonged to that branch of the family in England, the head of which was William Tuttle — called in the pedigree — "Esq. of Devonshire;" a Bailiff in 1528 and 1548, High Sheriff of Devon, 1549, and Lord Mayor of Exeter, 1552. Daniel Reed (3), of Nor walk, Conn., was a man of considerable dis- tinction in his time, of more than ordinary ability and of fine appearance. Newton Reed said of him that he built a house about 1720 one-half mile from the old homestead, a large and fine house in its day, two stories, front and rear. There all of his children were born and they were all rocked in the cradle which Mr. Newton Reed found there in 1835. There he found also the family record. Daniel Reed w^is among the first mem- bers of the church which was organized in June, 1774. and called "Mid- dlesex Church," within the present site of Darien. Elizabeth, wife of Daniel Reed, was a daughter of Joseph and Sarah (Plume) Kellogg, a direct descendant of Court Nicholas Bouton of France; of Robert Plume, Gent., and Grace Crackbone of Spaynes Hall, County Yeldham, England; of Sir John Morton of Bedfordshire, Eng- land; of Sylvester Baldwin of Astori Clinton, Bucks County, England, and on the Kellogg line she traced her ancestors to 1488. 12. MosES Read (4) was the founder of the Read family in Canada, re- moving from Salisbury, Conn., in 1784 to Upper Canada, now called On- tario. As the people of the Northern States at the time of the Civil war were actuated by the commendable desire to maintain a united nation, so Mr. Read at the time of the Revolutionary war was actuated by the same principal to maintain a united empire and was therefore a United Empire Loyalist. He was among the first settlers in the united counties of Leeds and Grenville, most of whom were from Connecticut. They ascended the St. Lawrence river from near Montreal, under the command of Maj.
